BUY AN EXT. WARRANTY??

I would probably bank the 7000 on such a new RV. I bought a 2003 fleetwood discovery 38d. There was so much that could go wrong on a 10 yr old unit. It cost me 4000 for the warranty. In the nine months I owned the unit I had the rear air replaced at a cost of $200 deductible. A new central vac system. It was a BIG plus when I sold the RV. The new owner paid the transfer fee. I couldn't imagine paying for a turbo or transmission. The warranty was bought through the dealer but I can't find who the policy was with.

I like extended warranties. That is just my opinion. I'm sure you realize by now there are two very polar camps regarding extended warranties. I do not do my own repairs...I could, I just do care to do so. During the first 5 years of my current MH I needed major repair of the basement airconditioning, repair of my hydraulic jack system, and a new frig control board. The repairs would have exceeded the cost of the warranty. Did I win, or was I just unlucky to need these repairs? In a previous MH the extended warranty covered repair to the transmission on the Holiday Rambler, well over $3K. But you must follow ALL the rules. Prior authorization is a must, prompt reporting, etc. Also, look for a policy that covers non-covered items if the damage was caused by a covered item.

I didn't buy a extended warranty when my Winnebago was purchased new in Jan. 2004. I relied on Winnebago quality and craftsmanship not to put me in a situation where I would need one. I've had very minor problems with my coach in the last 9-1/2 years. Good Luck in your decision!

7K is an awful lot of money for that extended policy. If you are the type that likes the secure feeling of having additional coverage I would recommend Wholesale Warranties. Bet you get better coverage, a policy that "exludes what isn't covered" vs. you trying to determine what is covered, for probably 3K or less. I have heard nothing bad about them and their ability to pay. I went through the same process last August when DW and I bought our Georgetown. Decided not to get the policy. The major dollar items on a motor home is engine and drive train. On gassers, Ford warrants for 5 years or 60K miles and they have been doing it for so long their chassis set-ups are just about bullet proof now. Seems to me that you see alot more diesel pusher owner getting the extra warranties because there are more things that can go wrong at a much bigger repair bill.

Brand new rig, you have at least a year to decide. If you find the warranty work piling up in the first year, you MAY want to consider an EW.

We bought a 2003 DP in 2010. We got a 2yr Platinum Coverage EW from XtraRide. Not cheap but we were buying our first higher-end DP and did not want any unwelcome surprises. After the two years are up (in Sept), I will probably look into a Drivetrain-Only coverage policy. $15k for an engine or tranny replacment scares me enough to buy insurance. But that's just me!

I can't even guess how much money I have saved by never buying an extended warranty in my life, I'm sure it is tens of thousands of dollars as I have bought a lot of RV's, cars, trucks, appliances, etc. over the last 50 years. I can only remember one time that I would have used it and that was on a Whirlpool washing machine. Save your money.

Are the warranties always transferable? My experience (at least with cars) is you can't transfer them. In California, since it's an insurance policy, if you sell the car while there is still time left on the extended warranty, you can cancel the warranty and get a refund on part of what you paid for it.

If you plan on selling at 5yrs, a remaining 2 yr warranty could help the sale. It did for me.

I know people who always buy the warranties on all the products they buy too. Now that is a huge waste of money. I wish that for the last 10 years or so every time somebody offered me a warranty on some item I bought from a store I would have asked how much and then kept track all these years. That number would be in the thousands of dollars if not over ten thousand by now. And to the best of my memory, I've never had anything break that would have ever been covered by one of those extended warranties.

I used to buy the warranties on cars and like I already said I bought it on my motorhome too. I have used the extended warranty several times on cars mostly for minor repairs. So if I added up all the extended warranties on cars, I'm many thousands of dollars in the hole on those.

Some owners won't leave the dealership without one while others would not take the coverage if you paid for it. All depends on your risk tolerance. Personally I would pass and self insure. Much less fine print on the contract. Plus if you are financing the coach and rolling the $7K into the cost of the coach the interest over the life of the loan is going to push the cost well beyond $7K. Plus you'll still be paying for it after the contract has run out.
