Campgrounds in PA, CT &Maine

RV Wizards,

We're planning the big RV tour 2013 and could use some recommendations. we be looking for good campgrounds to overnight, possibly 2 nights, near West Mifflin, PA (outside Pittsburgh), and Danbury, CT. Just stopping for a day or 2 to see some kin. Then we're headed to Maine for a week or so and need a rcommendation for a nice place near Sidney, Maine.

Anyone have aany real world experiences in these area's?
  • Griswold CT, Countryside RV Park, can't say enough about the place.
  • The koa outside pittsburgh is a decent place I stop there on the way home to nj
  • are they still operating? tried to check their website and got nothing.
  • Griswolds website is up, and the place looks nice, if a little far from Danbury. But, we have counties here in Florida that are probably bigger than the whole state of Connecticut so it shouldn't be that far a drive. And, it'ss close to Mystic, which I'd like my kids to see.
The KOA out side Pittsburgh also looks good. Now, anyone have any recommendations for Sidney, Maine?
  • We camp in Maine on a regular basis. You will be about one hour from Bar Harbour & Acadia National Park. Many good quality campgrounds in that area as well as endless seafood dinners, cheap lobster, ocean views from your campsite. A must visit location!

Just an hour south of Sidney is the Freeport area. Again many great ocean front campgrounds, shopping & dining.

Two hours south of Sidney is the Maine south coast with lots of fine sand beaches, campgrounds abound and very touristy. (President Bush and family summer in that area)

An hour south-west is Sabago Lake for a Maine woods and mountain camping experiance. Everything from high-end RV resorts ($$$) to rustic no service sites in the forest.

Anyhow, lots to do, a good variety of campgrounds and the friendliest folks on the planet, you can't go wrong!

Our favorite is the KOA Ocean Front in Bar Harbour, Watch the sunset over the ocean from under your awning, order a steamed lobster delivered to your site while still hot and wake up to the sounds of waves on the gravel beach - Maine at it's best.
  • There isn't a big rig friendly campground near Sidney, Me. There are several in Freeport, a nice small campground in Phippsburg, Me which is next to Bath and really close to Popham and Reed state beaches. It is also close to Georgetown Five Islands area and a quick trip up to Boothbay Harbor. I lived in Maine for 30+ years and we usually stay at Meadowbrook campgrounds in Phippsburg. It is a nice quiet place, does have a pool and playground. The CG has full-hookups, a small store, and they cook lobster every night. Be aware that none of the state park campgrounds have full-hookups. There are a lot of RV parks south of Portland, however, they are expensive. Sidney is about a hour from Phippsburg depending on what route you take. Check on www.rvparkreviews.com for Maine and you can probably find a CG where you would like to go. You may want to checkout Augusta West Kampground - Winthrop, Maine as it is closer to Sidney, however, I have never been there but seems to be the closet CG to Sidney. You can PM if you would like. Good Luck and Enjoy your trip to Maine

    Roadglider09,
You will find that from Danbury to Griswold is at best 1 1/2 hr to 2 hr ride....you are correct Ct is not a big state but the traffic is as dense as the Miami/Ft Lauderdale area...the closest campground in the Danbury area would be BranchBrook in Thomaston,Ct....maybe no more that 45 min from it back to Danbury and you have a KOA near Newburgh,NY......about a 40 minute ride to Danbury.....a few north of Danbury but the ride on secondary roads not worth it
Now, there are some great campgrounds near Mystic....Aces High being IMHO the nicest...Chuck
