Cell phone and data in Canada

Will be traveling in Canada for about a month. Cell phone connection and data is pretty important. I have the Canada upgrade but it is still pretty expensive for any significant use. I know I can use Skype on internet when I have a good connection. Is there a better way? Can I get a cheap phone for a month and buy minutes and forward my phone to it? I assume calls from Canada to the US on a Trac type phone would be expensive as well. Any experience with this issue?
  • Go over to the Canada / Alaska section, there's lots of discussion there on different cell / data plans. Check the Roll Call Alaska 2013 or 2014 posts. I know there's a lot in the 2013 post, I haven't looked a lot at the 2014 post.

  • If your current cell phone is not locked by your carrier then getting a new sim card is an alternative. You can get a sim card that allows unlimited Canada and US talk, long distance, text and data for periods of up to sixty days at a time. It is not free (about $60.00 per month). Try an internet search to find alternatives.

That type of unlimited data plan would allow you to use your phone as a hot spot giving an internet connection for your tablet or laptop.
  • I have a Tracfone that I use while in the states. When I cross the border into the states, it activates. When I cross back into Canada, no phone.
  • Sprint will unlock your phone to accept international SIM cards. There is no charge to do this. You do lose your number however. My work around for international travel is to rent a toll free number (~$5 month), forward my main number to the toll-free number, then forward my toll free number to whichever international SIM number I'm using. Its MUCH cheaper than just using your regular roaming plan.
