Charging Battery in storage

I have a Winnebago motorhome and have a question about charging the coach battery when you use the by pass for the coach and start battery and have it hooked up our house plugs. Will the battery still charged with the switches off. Thanks
  • Easy way to tell is read the battery voltage at battery with the charger not on , then turn on charger and read the battery voltage.
  • Probably but each manufacturer may do things a little different. Best to hook it up and get you meter out.
  • I just bought a couple of meters to figure that out - one will tell me how many amps it pulls on the garage outlet when charging.

It would seem on our Winnebago, with both coach and chassis switches off the inverter/charger is still connected directly to the coach batteries so they should charge, but just a theory.

The only way to be sure is to apply volt meter. measure voltage. note,

Plug in, then re-apply volt meter re-measure voltage and note

you might want to wait an hour before the 2nd meter.

12.x (or less) indicates battery not charging 13.x or 14.x = charging.
  • Check the voltage at both coach and start batteries.
Note that on our Winnie class C, connected to shore power, the converter charges the coach batteries only if they are online. The converter does not charge the start battery regardless of the disconnect switch positions.
