Coleman AC warranty

We just replaced our front Coleman heat pump. The cost was $1000 or so plus $100 labor.

The unit comes with a 2 year warranty, and an optional 3 year parts only warranty after 2 years is available for $89.

Do ya'll think it is worth buying? My understanding is that these units as mostly throw away devices and not worth repairing.

Thanks.
  • Thanks for the advice. I'll probably just stick with the 2 year factory warranty.

Two thoughts... On this type of device.. provided they did not screw something up like Carrier did on my Air-V's if it's going to fail it will do so promptly.. If it does not fail in the first few months odds are it will last at least a decade.

That, however, does not mean it can't fail 2.5 years down the road.. Just odds are in favor of the insurance company.

Even in a worst case... Calculating the cost of a new engine on my motor home... Just about what I'd have paid for an extended warranty over the same period.

OH,,, and the check from the insurance company.... Arrived today.. It's paid for.
  • I tossed a video camera once after it broke, only to find out it had an extended warranty from Best Buy. My rule after that was 0 extended warranties because by the time the factory one expires I've already forgotten I had an extended warranty.

I personally would consider an AC reasonably reliable, so not sure the risk justifies the cost. There are a ton out there still chugging away after 20 years.

I would say the parts warranty isn't worth it. As mentioned there isn't much serviceable on these units. If anything serious goes wrong with it no one will work on it, and very few places will even sell parts. Almost anything that can be replaced will cost less than the extended parts warranty.

In 2015 we had a problem with our Coleman Mach 8. In our case the system wouldn't switch from cooling to heating. When I went through the diagnosis procedures it turned out to be a bad control module. Every service center we went to didn't even want to look at it. All they wanted to do was replace the entire unit. I finally called the Coleman tech line and explained the problem to a rep. He sent out a new control box at no charge. The unit now works fine, but had I taken it to a dealer it would have resulted in a complete unit replacement that wasn't necessary.
  • Can you afford to replace it and not break the bank i.e. Have to cut back drastically on your lifestyle? If you can then don't get it. That's how I've always seen it as a insurance plan.
