Dogs and ticks while traveling

Also not all is fail safe I used an anti tick and flea to my pup but he still got a tick that I missed in his ear and he got sick from that bite and almost lost my little pal.

Luckily ticks are more rare here. Recently found the 1st one on my Pug in the last 2 years. Asked vet about removal.
Using vasoline to "smother" the tick or alcohol to get him to release doesn't work and may cause the tick to throw up which can spread disease. Agreed with naturist above, grasp at the skin with tweezers and remove the tick.

Goats are the only animals that will eat poison oak here.
I have never seen thick or mosquito on poison oak so I assume eating is all it takes for prevention.
Not that I am willing to try with dogs or myself.

It has mosquito repellent properties too.

And you can use premetherin impregnated dog clothing too.

The prime ingredient to many of these meds is ivermectin. While I can't help you with dogs, (ivermectin is in heartworm meds) it does keep the ticks off goats in Missouri. :)

We have 3 small dogs and since they play with each other, we do not want to use any poisons on their skin.
We learn to be aware about thicks and white dogs with thick fur make it easy as thick has to walk on the top for a moment before it finds a place - usually on the belly or behind ear where it can go deep to the skin.
Where we live - with high population of wild animals we had 1 hr hiking that generate about 15 catch thicks (on 3 dogs).
Than at home one more proper check.
Thicks are seasonal and unpredictable.
Last Sunday we spend over 2 hr in the park. Going over tall grass, narrow hiking path and no thicks.
Than we walk paved road down to parking lot and one dog catch a thick.

Go to Missouri and your dog will be exposed to fleas, ticks, and heartworm bearing mosquitos. Get NexGuard and HeartGuard, both are a once-a-month treatment. Give the dog the NexGuard before you go and the heartworm after. The former will kill fleas and ticks that bite, the heartworm will kill the worms before they afflict the dog's heart. Both tabs are chewable treats your dog will love, so no trouble to administer.

You and the DW will want to check each other very closely every evening for ticks. Perfect excuse for an inch by inch look-see. Ticks crawl around for a while seeking a perfect hiding place before biting, then they need to be attached at least 8 hours and probably more like 24 hours before there is any risk of disease, so you've got lots of time to remove them. And the proven best way to remove them is to use pointed tweezers to grab 'em as close to the skin as you can and pull 'em off, being careful not to squeeze the body. The old wives tale about leaving head or mouth parts is hogwash.

Where I live you can't step outside 9 months of the year without picking up ticks. They are annoying but not really a big deal.

We used to live in Missouri and let me tell you, there are tick problems there, especially if you take your dog on a trail with grass around it. We did and only went about 100' and we had absolutely hundreds immediately crawling up our legs. Yes, hundreds. Take all the precautions you can for you and your pets.
