Driveshaft disconnects for towed vehicles

Does anybody have experience or opinions regarding use of driveshaft disconnects (like Remco/Southwest Driveline Service products) that are used to flat-tow a vehicle that has an automatic transmission?

I sent you a PM for my brother.
  • I have one installed on a ranger and one on a f150, installed both myself and they work great. I got mine from Superior Driveline in Des Moines IA.
  • Ignore anyone who says the Remco is not a great way to tow a rear-wheel drive vehicle. I can give you plenty of stories about folks who say McDonald's sucks but it does not. Remco does what it claims it can do AS LONG AS you have it installed properly. That is the #1 issue. Have it installed by CW and you will likely have issues. Have it installed by a trained drive train specialist and you will like not have any issues at all. I know. I have done both and I had to have a drive train specialist fix the CW installation.

I have known a few that had issues. and many who did not. They are good products in theory they can not fail if properly installed and the cable kept clean and lubed from time to time.. Lubing the cable is the tricky part.
  • Towed two Aerostar vans about 80,000 miles without any problems with our Remco disconnect system. Only reason we aren't using one still is Ford stopped building the vans many years ago. The Aerostar was my wife's favorite vehicle.
  • The Remco is an excellent product. Towed a full sized extended Chevy van for years. Changed vans and installed another Remco. Great system. Just don't let someone like Camping World do the installation. You need to have a shop that does driveshaft work do the installation. Henderson line-up in OR and I think it's Driveshaft King in TX but Remco could likely refer you to a go installer.

  • We used a demo axle lock for many years and loved it. However, I do not think that are available any longer.
  • I've had two small rear wheel drive pickups over the years that I had Remco driveshaft disconnects in. They worked well as long as you kept the connecting gears clean.
  • I've known several people with them (Remco). Never really had any problems.
