emergency exits in Class A motorhomes

Can anyone tell us the law on emergency exits in Class A Motorhomes? Doesn't there have to be an emergency exit in the bedroom in the rear of the motorhome? We purchased a 2004 Allegro Tiffin 30 DA, it has no emergency exit in the bedroom.

  • I don't know about a law. RVIA does list some standards. From their website:

Fire & Life Safety Requirements as specified in NFPA 1192 Standard for RVs.

Interior finish flame spread limitations are required.

Minimum exit facilities providing unobstructed travel to the outside of the vehicle must be available.

Smoke alarms, Fire extinguishers, CO alarms and Propane detectors are mandate based on applicable criteria.

Maybe if you followed up with them or checked the NFPA 1192 they reference you could gain some more info. Clicky

For those worried about the height, I read a thread a while back where a poster said they put their picnic table under the window to climb down on in case of emergency. Don't shoot the messanger :)
  • Any particular reason for the 2nd post while answers were coming in on the first?
  • Sorry, can't help you with your rig...our Phaeton has one in the bedroom and also another in the kitchen area, plus of course, the entry door.

I was reading in a Motor Home magazine that featured the new 2016 American Eagle. It has an optional emergency exit "door" in the bedroom that folds outward with hinges on the bottom and becomes steps down to the ground. Is that cool, or what!

I'm sure you have an emergency exit window in the rear of the coach somewhere...just not marked. If not, factory screwed up big time.

Does it have an emergency exit ANYWHERE? For a coach that length the emergency exit window does not have to be in the bedroom.

I have a 1999 Allegro an i suggested to them that a rear emergency exit needs to be improved. I am aware of left window exit but most of us being mature adults would not fare too well getting out as the height in addition would not be easy. For somewhat invalid it would almost be impossible.Other thing mentioned is manufactures should have lifts available also.Perhaps these issues have been addressed in newer models.

For "special" needs, I think lifts, etc. could be arranged.

For the majority, the standard window exit should suffice. If my rig was on fire and I had to exit in an emergency, I would rather exit from a +/-6' height than burn. Even if I sprained or broke a leg in the process. Maybe someone would be willing to drag me away if I could not crawl on my own.

There is no sticker and there are no red handles like the instruction manual suggests

From the video of your year/ floor plan I watched, the desk makeup area at the foot of the bed has a red handle and is the emergency exit. Not sure if theres a law or not but i Knoew if theres a fire going out any way you can Will happen .. I/d rather break a arm or leg falling put than the alternative !

  • Have you checked the windows? One of them should have a sticker.
