Eternabond tape on Winnebago roofs?

In another thread, and others I have read, it has been mentioned that some have used Eternabond tape along the edges and ends of roofs on Winnebago motorhomes. What width tape are you using along the edges? There is very little of the exposed extrusion to tape to on my 2007 Suncruiser.

Thanks-- Mick
  • I just did some repairs to the rubber roof on our 96 Southwind.
I used 2" Eternabond along the edge of the roof. About 1/2 an inch went over the top of the rain gutter and the rest on the rubber roof.

I would have used 4" along the edge but, the roof curved and I was concerned bout applying the tape straight, even and With no bubbles.

4" Eternabond was used where the rubber met the front and rear caps.

I hope I answered your question.
  • Bringing MH to dealer tomorrow for some service I'm going to chat with him regarding maintance and this whole roof issue. This is our second Winnebago and we have had excellent luck with them.
  • 4 inch on the caps to roof and 2 inch on sides to roof. Buy 4 inch roll and cut in in half.
  • I would go with 2" on the sides. 1/2 " into the extrusion and an 1 1/2 " on the fiberglass roof sheeting. and use 4" where the roof meets the end caps. Just make sure the adhesive is in good shape before covering with the Eternabond.

That was what I was thinking.

What would be the best way to cut the 4" wide roll in half? The glue is super sticky and I find it a bit hard to cut. Thanks-- Mick
  • I used 2" Eternabond tape on my previous coach, a 2002 Journey. I put the tape on in 2005 and it was still holding up well and looking good when we traded the coach in 2013. I also used the 4" at the front and rear cap to roof seams.
  • Thanks for all replies.

I will make sure all the seam sealant is in good shape and then cover with Eternabond. I would think that once the tape is installed it will prevent UV light from destroying the sealant and the roof will be very secure for many years. I was thinking 2" along the sides and 4" over the top ends just like suggested by many of you.

    Thanks a lot-- Mick

For uv protection, I put white gorilla tape over my cured sealant. It was very quick and easy to apply and was inexpensive. Not sure how long it will last, but in my mind it does not have to last very long, as for now I plan to remove it to inspect the joint 2-3 times a year.
  • Unless your coach is really weathered, I wouldn't do the tape. The seal is pretty easy to maintain. I've seen that eternabond yellow a bit.
