We have a Ford but not your year and that transmission. I just gear down going up as needed and use the same gears coming down. If it was your first time being un comfortable would be OK. I have got that way many times but have been going over it since the mid 80s.
Since its multi lanes now you just take your time up and down. Your speed should be where you feel comfortable. I usually use 2/3 going up and 1/2 going down. It is a 6.8% grade and a long way up and down.
