Fiberglass Roof Maintenance

My 2000 Winnebago Ultimate Advantage has a roof that I would love to know how to clean well and put a coating or whatever on it to protect it better. If a light rubbing compound is needed, no problem. I will do all the work myself. Roof is in good condition, no spider cracking or evidence of failing areas. I have noticed the last 2 years there will be a 10" to 14" slight hump show up here and there. They will run side to side and you must get down to see them. They raise no more than an 3/4 " high. I have chased some leaks by the J Channel and cap with success. Eternabond Tape is well worth the investment.
Thanks for reading. Looking for any ideas on the humps. Looking for advice on restoring a the luster back into the fiberglass roof. You've all helped me so much so far.....Thanks.
  • I use Simple Green once a year. I just discovered Mr. Clean Magic Mop...does a bang up job on the awning(s) in an astonishingly quick time....will try it on my fiberglass roof this coming spring.
  • I have used a power washer and it did OK but the best thing I have used was just my brush on a long handle and car wash soap (same thing I use on my side walls, you can hook a hose to it but I don't). I don't wax it but it looks clean and white and it is a 2001. You have to clean it good at least once a year, it is amazing how dirty they can get in a short time.

    werni9,
Cleaning a fiberglass roof is no big deal. You can use just about anything you want on it. Soap, water, even some cleanser, if needed. I've done all that and my roof, as you see in the pictures, is just fine. Some folks think that anything other than water is used, the roof will disintegrate. Well, not so. That fiberglass is a strong substance and can take a ton of wear and tear and, cleanings, with all kinds of solutions.

Basically, I washed it with a good dish detergent, and some cleanser for some stubborn spots. Then I used a steel scraper on it for all the dumb-a$$ silicone drops and foot marks that the installers of the Kingdome left on it all over the place.

Then, out came my professional Dewalt buffer. Now, this is not one of those cheesy, $29.00 Harbor Freight random orbital units. This is a professional one that's used in rubbing out new and aged paint jobs on cars/trucks/Motor homes etc.

I used 3M Rubbing compound on that roof and it did one hell-of-a bang up job. I then used Kit car wax on it and, as you'll see in the pics, its pretty darn nice looking. And all that **** about being SLIPPERY when wet, OF COURSE it's going to be slippery, IT'S FLAT, IT'S A ROOF, AND IT'S FIBERGLASS, AND IT'S WET, what does anyone expect???

  • I just use Simple Green 1 to 1 applied on the fiberglass roof with a deck brush of my Winnebago. I also use a power washer on it's lowest setting. I avoid hitting all seams with the power washer. I've had two small leaks and they both came after 9 years of purchasing my coach new I used dicor self leveling caulk to make the repair.

A Mr Clean Magic Eraser on a sponge mop will do a great job with minimum elbow grease. Some owners use a couple of coats of "Mop & Glow for protection. Repeat annually.
  • I wouldn't use rubbing compound on it myself. clean and wax at the most. any boat shop can supply needed stuff.
