Fleetwood Excursion 2008 40X adding Weight to Front Axle

I just added an Cruzierlift motorcycle lift on my coach. The Rear axle is rated for 19000lbs and now weighs 19,200. With the bike loaded on the coach the Steer axle now only weighs 9000lbs. Before it weight aprox 9500lbs. It drives fine and steers the same. The Front axle is rated at 12,000lbs. I talked to freightliner and they said they would like to see about 10,500 on the front axle. The Front axle has never weighed more than 9800lbs since I have owned the coach. I talked the Cruzierlift and they said they have never had anybody add any weight on a coach my size to the front axle. i am skeptical of adding more weight to the front axle. Has any one ever done this before?
Any feed back would be appreciated.
Thanks
  • Hi,

I would be more concerned about the 200 pounds of overload on the rear axle than the front axle being 500 - 800 pounds to light. Yes both are concerns.

Look at what is in the storage bays. Move the heavy stuff forward. Same thing inside.

Where is your fresh water tank? Was it 1/2 full or empty when you did the weight check? That can change things quite a bit - normally about 100 gallons or upwards of 800 pounds of water in them. You really can't do much about the black and grey tanks, other than realize that when you do fill them, you will be overloading the rear axle even more. So best to find a place to dump before heading out on a 800 mile drive on the interstates. And do not travel with a full tank of fresh water when the motorcycle is also on board. 1/4 tank is more than enough for washing hands and flushing. You can keep a couple of 1 gallon drinking water containers in the sink or refrigerator for drinking.

    Have fun on your travels!

    Fred.

I would not worry about a 5-800 lb decrease in the front axle weight.
  • Please reread your post and correct it if it's wrong. I assume you meant FRONT axle weighs 9k NOT the DRIVE axle..but you know what they say about assumptions.

That said, I adjust the weight on my front axle depending on the weight measurements when I have my rig weighed. Obviously four corner weights are optimal but not always convenient nor feasible. If you have a tag axle coach, raising and lowering the pressure on the tag, adjusts the weight placed on the drive and front axles. So, in answer to your question, yes, you can add weight to the front axle. Again, I assume you contacted Freightliner with your weights and told them you added the M/C lift. Their recommendation was 10500 on the front axle. If you add extra weight on the front, how would that play out if you don't take the M/C with you?....Dennis
