Ford F-53 V-10 with a 5R110W 5 Speed Trans. Filter(s)

I have a 2014 Winnebago Sightseer with the Ford F-53 V-10 with a 5R110W 5 Speed Auto Trans. I want to change the Transmission oil and filter, but I am getting conflicting information. I think the filter is the FT-180 Motorcraft Trans filter. Now the parts.ford.com site says there is a second in line filter on the F-53 stripped chassis the Ft-185 filter. I cannot find that filter anywhere on my coach. Does anyone know for sure it is there and if Yes, where it is??

For earlier 5r100w, folks are also recommending changing the pan out for a 2008 pan which allows you then to use the good filter (FT-180). The 2006 has a screen only filter and that external toilet paper roll. When the external filter gets clogged, it just bypasses it. In reality, the 2006 only filters about 10% of the fluid. If you change the pan and put in the better filter, you will filter 100% fluid. If you don't do that, there is an aftermarket external filter that is supposed to be much better than the Ford toilet paper roll.

Wait a minute I'm mistaken. For several model years Ford used to use an external filter assembly that had to be disassembled and a paper filter cartridge replaced. The assembly is located as I posted. Not sure when Ford changed it but very different than the inline FT-185 filter.

When you drain the oil save every drop and measure how much you were able to collect so you can refill with the same amount. If you blow out the cooler and lines you should be able to remove 12 quarts. At least that is how much I can remove. You can not drain the torque converter without removing it so a driveway service is not a complete drain but about 3/4 drain and refill. For my 2006 chassis Ford recommends a 30K miles service for a class A but since I only do a partial drain and refill I drop to 20K miles or about every three years.

For a proper drain you need a flush machine that can heat to the oil to 160 degrees and pump the new in and old out. The transmission has a thermostat just like the engine cooling and unless you can get it to open you can't perform a complete exchange.

Passenger side, inside the frame rail, just behind the radiator and to the outside of the A/C compressor. Just follow the oil lines from the transmission to the radiators and you'll find the assembly if included for your model year chassis.

There is not an inline filter on the 2014 F53 motorhome, you have a high efficiency sump filter that is Motorcraft part number FT-180.

I am fairly certain the FT-185 part that is shown in the catalog is an in-line filter that is installed after major transmission service (rebuild or installation of a remanufactured transmission) to protect the transmission from any debris that did not get flushed out of the cooler lines or cooler.

Your year probably does not have the external filter (I think they stopped at 2008). If you have it, it would be under the right side. Crawl under and look up. http://www.dieselhub.com/maintenance/5r110w-torqshift-service.html
