Ford E450 5R110W trans...trans pan mod...who's done it?

So over on the Ford truck forums I read about a trans pan mod for the pre 2008 5R110W transmision found on E450 chassis.

The mod is using a Ford OEM oan from a late 2008 or newer 5R110W trans and the matching Ford trans filter.

This mod allows for low micron full flow transmission fluid filtering. The pre 2008 pans only filter about 10% and when thermostat closes and then only filters 10% of that 10%...basically nothing.

Mod can be used with the stock canister filter (aka toilet paper roll) or without.

Anyone done this mod? If so, what details and input can you provide?

Here is the link where it is discussed. There are several links, this is just one I started

Thanks

Scangauge installs on the OBD2 port under the steering wheel. It basically gives you access to the data the vehicle computer already has.

It's accurate, as long as the vehicle transmission temp sensor is accurate.

There are some newer OBD2 devices that will give you the same information. I'm just not as familiar with them.

  • I added a temp gauge via ScanGauge, and here's what I do with the info.

It has only happened a few times (in the summer, in the mountains) but it makes me feel better :)

yes, you are correct, just a drain/refill... I don't have the heated flushing machine

I thought about adding the temp gauge, but didn't know what I'd do with the info, so I passed

This is what you will need (if you buy the case of 12 quarts Mercon SP, you will
be left with about 2 quarts when done with flush and refill):

You must have performed a drain and fill....as a flush requires a heated machine. I believe this trans holds closer to 15 qts total. The drain and fill is when the pan is dropped and filters are changed but no flush occurs.

Did you install a temp gauge?
  • I installed a PML pan on my Winnebago View (Mercedes transmission) and am very happy with it. Naysayers on the Sprinter forum were concerned about my ground clearance. I pointed out to them that I had some eleven inches and the pan was way above the front suspension crossmember, and above the transmission crossmember also. These truck chassis have lots of clearance, unless you are four wheeling, the extra deep pan is not a real issue, it probably only extends about a inch and a half or two inches below the original pan. If you want to be sure, measure the distance from the flange on the case to the bottom of the pan. The PML pan is 6¼ inches below the flange.

As noted, the additional volume of fluid will aid in keeping the transmission cooler. The aluminum pan also provides a place to install a temp sensor (optional, you have to specify the boss to be machined when ordering) but I did read that this transmission has a port for a temp probe (I think).

um... if you are saying that more fluid is a bad thing, that would be incorrect...
the more fluid there is, the more the heat load is distributed in the volume of
fluid, and the easier it is for the cooling system to manage the temperature
    down....

I just did this mod (with the 2008+ new filter) and instead of the Ford stamped
pan, I used this cast pan (link below) .... yes it sits a little lower, but holds 4 more
quarts, and has a machined flat sealing surface... you will need to use a flat gasket
with it, do NOT reuse the stock molded gasket

This is what you will need (if you buy the case of 12 quarts Mercon SP, you will
be left with about 2 quarts when done with drain and refill):

PML 11049 Cover with new longer hardware $249

Fel Pro 18714 Flat Gasket $17

Motorcraft 8C3z7a098d NEW 2008+ internal trans filter $44

Motorcraft FT145 filter (keep the pre 2008 housing) $22

Magnefine M010CC Filter added to the trans fluid cooler line $34

Case of 12 quarts Mercon SP $66

    Parts total = $432

Be sure to use "Fuel Injector Type" hose clamps on the Magnefine filter,
instead of the supplied standard type... you can get en entire assortment,
or just get two, or ask your installer to substitute the better clamps

Fuel Injector type clamps assortment $14

  • I would not want the pan too deep, as it would sit closer to the ground. I believe the later stock pan holds a little more fluid. The more fluid there is, the more there is to cool down.
  • If the late style filter can be incorporated in the earlier transmission, buy a deep aluminum pan for the later internal filter model, and the pieces needed to convert to the internal filter and have at it. The deep aluminum pan will give you about a gallon more capacity, for cooler operation, and the pan will aid in cooling also.
