Have you replaced slideout seal/gasket yourself?

My slideout gasket has totally come off. A dealer here in town said I could order it and replace it myself. However, another auto body shop that works on my MH quoted me $500 to order and replace the gasket. Can anyone tell me which direction to go? Naturally, I don't want to pay someone $500 if I and a friend can do it myself. The guy at the dealership (they're not a Newmar dealer but I could order it through a Newmar dealer in another town)said they're not hard to install.

Help please. LOL

Still wondering if anyone has had any experience with this issue.

  • lucy looks good and should last you a long time, slide gasket can be gotten at about any rv surplus store, all you need is length of it, tell them you have a newmar and they will know what to give you, not hard to put on, but need help.
  • I was going to tell you that you could probably find a video on Youtube on how to do it, but I just searched Youtube and can't find one. I also have my slide gasket coming out on one of my slides and I need to fix it. So if you figure this one out let us know.
  • Lucy, I had my gasket totally replaced around 2008 in a Winnebago shop for $800.00 I did not have the tools or the shop to replace it myself and it was raining hard and water was leaking inside the coach so I had to get it done ASAP. One winter night it was raining hard the rain stopped and the cleared up outside and froze out. I didn't know that I had a small pool of water on my slide out awning topper that was frozen. I retracted my bedroom slide out and the frozen water was like sharp glass and cut into the top of my gasket. The next day it started raining again and I discovered the leak and the RV Shop made me a top priority and fixed it when I arrived. Good Luck to you!
  • Not sure which gasket you are referring to but we replaced the gasket that runs along the bottom edge of the slide out. Simply sent a picture of the old gasket to the RV dealer so they could order the correct one. It was easy to install, although it was kinda awkward to do. Make sure you measure how much you will need because it's expensive.
  • It depends which gasket you are having problems with and how it is attached.

I replaced the large "wiper seal" that spanned the gap between the slide and MH on my last rig. The cost of a length of seal to do the job was about $225. In this case, it simply pressed on a flange that surrounded the slide. It was quite easily done from the inside with the slide partially extended, though care was required to get the corners right.

Don't know if this matches your circumstances or not.
