How not to Toad

D and I are preparing to head south as soon as the new Grand Baby arrives in Dec. This will be our first long term adventure in our C Class and while I have Toaded Id rather not deal with it.

I was going to just use my C to get around. Has anyone used Motorized Bikes to get around? Are they reliable or is there always an issue that needs tweaking. They are inexpensive, go about 30 which will get us around and wont add much weight.
Thanks for the feedback
  • Yes, motorized bicycles are indeed reliable and I know a bunch of folks in bigger cities who use them, but when it gets wet they run into problems. If you are using in December, I would worry about cold and wet weather.

  • We have done fine without a toad with our 32' MH. Most of the time we tow the boat so never have used a toad. There have been a few times when daughter has met us at campground with her car because her schedule didn't allow her to go same days we did. One was getting around downtown Savannah. The biggest issue we've found is not driving around but parking. Usually you can find somewhere to park but it might be a little bit of a walk. Your idea of small motorized bike might work great there...get close as you can in MH and then use bike. You also might need to adjust your campsite setup practices to minimize time getting MH ready to roll. We try not to do anything like awning lights that would take time to break camp.
  • Ask yourself, can you survive living in a new environment without transportation except those bicycles for months on end except for the motorhome which will require the preparations for travel.
  • You might consider a small motor scooter.
    Like the Honda Ruckus.

  • Where are you going? There are some places you need a car, some places where bicycles work fine, some places where everybody gets around in roadworthy (or not) golf carts. Some places public transport works well enough, lived in cities where I didn't drive anything months at a time.

Not all snowbirds, motorhome or no, tow a car with them. Many keep a car at each end of the trip, if going back and forth to the same places. Some who snowbird in big fivers keep a car at each end because their tow vehicle is kind of big for getting around. My brother has a nine year old SUV at one end of his trip, a 22 year old sedan at the other, but in his southern home 90% of his trips out of the house are golf cart. Whatever works for the particular destination, his is a golf resort.

Getting around locally in a C motorhome? I do it while traveling, when going to mostly rural areas, but that's moving every day, running errands enroute, not breaking camp to get around. If I'm staying for a while I tow a car (two set up for it) or arrange alternate transportation (rent, borrow, hire, or use public transport). Most snowbird destinations I know have been so congested, parking and roads, that a C is too big for getting around, parking the biggest problem.
