lubrication of tow bar

Roadmaster recommends lubricating their towbars with silicon spray only. I can understand all areas of the towbar except the part that fits down on top of the 2 inch ball on the back of the motorhome. I may be wrong but it seems to me that I need to use some type of grease on the ball. Am I wrong? What are your thoughts?

  • I use the silicone spray lubricant on the tow bar moving parts, but I also use regular grease on the ball. Be advised however that if you are not careful you will get that grease all over. Either the ball or the socket on the tow bar are both fully capable of making a real mess, on your hands, on your clothes, everywhere. Believe me I speak from experience. I'm thinking of cutting a tennis ball to place over the ball end.
  • I use heavy silicone spray on the moving parts including the ball.
I do not believe there is as much weight on the ball to require a heavier lubricant.
  • I have never lubricated my balls on my trailers and I have had them for a lot of years.
  • I'd use Green Grease from autozone. It's "waterproof". You won't need much. A simple tube should last you a lifetime.
  • Medico is right. I actually have a small jar of "trailer ball grease". Its clear, lithium base and you really don't need to use much or it will make a mess but it does cut down on friction and wear.
  • The only thing I would be concerned about with the grease is that it will attract and hold ANY dirt that happens to come along. This is why I don't use grease in areas where dirt can collect. As for my tow bar, I use a good silicone after cleaning the tow bar prior to every season.....

  • Anything petroleum will grab any grit that comes it's way and chew up metal and nylon. I've looking for surplus Molybdneum dry lube and see if it might work better but so far silicon is the best. Have to wash the tow bar good every time we park because dirt homes in on it from the underside of the MH.
  • I grease the ball and the ends of the Reese Dual cam but not the part that is cammed over. It is a braking mechanism and they say never lube it. I wear old clothes and don't wory about greasy pants. Makes me attractive to the Ladies.
