MotoSat Datastorm

Does anyone still use a MotoSat Datastorm?

There was one mounted on my motorhome when I bought it. I have taken it off. I see them on Ebay but don't know if they are still in use.
  • Yes, they are still being used. We use 2 on our productions vehicles. Satellite has returned back to it's roots and become more of a commercial product again. Do you know what dish you have?

The dish has Directway Hughes printed on it.
  • We have a $5000 boat anchor of 2006 vintage on our roof. Haven't used it since service became hard to find. Mifi is much faster, but doesn't work without towers, but then again our Datastorm wasn't any good in trees. Always paid for dual service, we've had a cellular modem since 2005.

If you are wanting to sell it, it really has no re-sale value but Don Marr with Oregon RV satellite (or similar) will usually pay the shipping to him for the parts.
If you are wanting to use it the Hughes service available is about 1/10 the speed of cellular and costs 4 times more. You can expect to pay $80+/month for speeds averaging about 100K up (yes, 1/10Mb) and right around 1Mb down. The company is long out of business so your best source for support or to see if anyone wants any of the parts is www.datastormusers.com

I use mine for Direct HD TV by putting a SL3 LNB on it... works well in Canada where you need a bigger dish.
  • I think anybody would be better off with 3G/4G than anything else these days. It's just simply too easy AND you probably have it anyway. You can get booster antennas for them too to get you much further in the boonies.

Wow, I see he sells them for about $3000. I guess he's got a great business if anyone ever buys them. Get units for cost of shipping and sell it for $3k. That's good information but I can't imagine anyone going to the trouble of shipping it off somewhere for nada. Even a used antenna controller goes for a minimum $300.

Oh well. it didn't cost me anything and I can haul it to the dump ground for nothing.
