Need Help On Trip to Hurricane, Utah

YIKES! I am leaving Houston tomorrow for Thornton, CO and I would not take that route unless I really had nothing else to do for the next week or so. I want to get to Thornton and that means I will head up 45 to the Dallas/FT Worth area, work my way over to 287 up to Amarillo and go from there. I would recommend the same route to the OP. From there we are headed in different directions but the OP has gotten some very good advice on how to get to Hurricane.

My Bing Map with the Route I'd take - sorry - but never get this close to Canyon de Chelly and not stop - Monument Valley always needs one more visit/sunrise - Page and Lake Powell, just need to see if the water level has gone up? - North Rim - the Breakfast Buffet has never disappointed Me, watched the sun come out after a snowstorm on June 6th one year, Red Rocks and White Snow will never forget it - Jacob Lake seems like we always stop there - then on to Hurricane. 1,531 miles, whats a few miles for so many Great Smiles, and Beautiful sites.

The routes posted are good. The ride through the mountains is pretty easy and secnic just take your time.

There is a lot to do and see in Utah. We are headed to Kanab in a couple of weeks.

If you have time and are animal lovers I urge you to stop and visit Best Friends Animal Society in beautiful Angel Canyon. Kanab UT.http://bestfriends.org/

They do wonderful animal support nationwide, and were the ones granted custody of Michael Vick's fighting dogs by the court. They have daily guided tours.

There is also a nice RV park in Kanab. Kanab RV Corral.

There are no low underpasses or tunnels. I think people are thinking about going through Zion National Park to get to Hurricane. That is NOT the recommended route. You will go from Page to Kanab on route 89. There is some up and down but nothing extreme and it is a beautiful drive. Then you go south from Kanab to Fredonia. Then take 389 from Fredonia to Hurricane. To get to Virgin from there, you take 9 to Virgin through LaVerkin. You should not have an issues with that route. We have driven it many, many times and it is the only route we will take from Hurricane to Page.

mcrowley and 2gypsies.....Thank you both for responding.... actually to Page, AZ looks fairly scenic and easy.... our concerns are from Page to Fredonia and from Fredonia to Hurricane.... really from Page on into Hurricane.... some RVers have suggested steep grades in the mountains, low underpasses, and tunnels with less than 13ft clearance.... the steep grades we can probably handle ok.... it's the low underpasses and the tunnels that give me concerns.... since you all are from that area you can probably answer those questions.... since we are towing a Jeep, we cannot backup without unhooking and this is major problem.... our reservations are in Virgin..... when we get there and unhook and start exploring the surrounding countryside in our Jeep, we will probably realize how baseless our concerns were.

Moab is a great destination and with your jeep an off-road paradise describe well in guide books. Getting across Texas is the hard part, takes forever. You will go to Junction great campground and then either head north to Lubbock or west to El Paso. We usually take one route out and the other coming back. Second nite campgrounds are slim pickens so plan ahead.

I live in Hurricane, UT. I recommend the route 2gypsies recommended. Go to Flagstaff, north to Page, Page to Kanab, Kanab to Fredonia and then west to Hurricane. I would NOT recommend you take the more southerly route that goes by Jacob's lake. There are lots of blind curves. I almost ran head on into a truck on that road.

If by any chance you are a golfer, there is a great course at Lake Powell and the one in Hurricane if fantastic.

Thanks for the update and "To Everyone Else:" I did suggest doing the South and North Rims of the Grand Canyon. I would probably use I-40 to Flagstaff and then 180 and 64 to S Rim. There is a USFS CG couple miles south of the rim on the east side with sites big enough. We are not desert people so we like the N rim instead of Page/Lake Powell/Antelope Canyon.

Ivylog.... They (Freightliner) never told me exactly.... they think it was a rocker switch problem.... I have been on several steep (down) grades since they released the coach and it works great (just like it always did).

To Everyone Else: Thank you for all of your suggestions which it looks like we will use a little of all of them. After reading them, I think I was making an easy problem hard. I was reminded by my wife "that it is not the destination, it's the journey"..... smart woman.
