New coach

Hello All,

We have just purchased a 2011 Diplomat and are considering a couple of changes ...wanted to get the opinion of folks on the forum..

1We are lining the cabinets with very thin carpet (similar to what we have seen in some of the American and Tiffin coaches) and wondered what might be the preferred way to attach same to cabinet base ? Double faced tape or spray adhesive ?

2 Is anyone aware of a company that makes a retro fit auto/remote bay door lock mechanism?

Thanks for any input

Mark
  • Can't help with 1.

There are several "projects" where people have posted about retro fitting remote door locks. Search for remote door locks or similar terms. I do know that all of them have reported that it is a lot of work and you will get very familiar with your storage compartments from the inside. Each door needs to be wired.
  • On #1 I would not put the carpet material in cupboards where dishes or pots & pans are to be stored. Our experience was those items slide around and clink on one another going down the road. We found the rubberized shelving material worked better for those areas. What I bought in a carpet like material for the other cupboards was a rather thin runner type carpet. It usually comes in 3' to 6' widths is bought by the foot and is sort of stiff. But once cut to size if lays flat in the cupboards and no adhesive needed making it easy to remove for cleaning.

  • For the carpet, I would probably try initially just cutting it carefully to shape and seeing if it stays in place on its own without any adhesive. My guess is the needed notches and jags in the outline would do a pretty good job of keeping it in position adequately.

If some sort of adhesive is needed, I think contact adhesive or similar is what I would try rather than double-stick tape, at least the foam double-stick mounting tape. The foam tape would cause ridges in the "floor" of the cabinet due to its thickness.
  • I"d just staple the carpet down. When it's time to replace just pull the staples out with the carpet.
  • We just ripped all the carpeting off the shelves and put down the rubber shelf liner. After 20 years, the carpet got pretty gross.
  • I would also use the rubber shelf liner instead of the carpet. It is non slip and easy to take out to clean or replace. I also cut pieces of the shelf liner and put them between my plates so they do not rattle.
  • Thanks all for your thoughts and suggestions...

Decided to go with rubber in the kitchen and carpet in all else
