New Roof

Hello,

My wife and I recently bought a 1987 Toyota Odessey. The engine is in great shape (54,000 miles) but the RV itself is in a really bad state. We didn't really know what we are getting ourselves into and so now we are very much in the process of learning what we need to do to fix it up. We have decided to use EPDM Liquid Roof to repair the roof due to the many different layers of many different things that have been used (or misused)over the years to fix it up. We also need to replace all the interior wood including the frame due to water damage. My question is regarding the order of how things should be done. My initial thought was that the liquid roof should be done first, but now I am thinking that replacing the wood frame would change how the roof is sitting right now and therefore would interfere with the liquid roof repair.

Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks

Spencer
  • If you don't really have the time, the many required DIY skills, work space, tools and skilled help available, consider just selling the rig as a "project", you may be time and money ahead that way. It could take many months and lots of money including parts and labor for repairs and upgrades that you can't do yourself.

In the end, will you have something that is worth the time and money spent? Will you feel stuck with the rig and need to keep it to get some of the money's invested out of it?

We spent $13K to buy an old but nice looking orphan Class C and spent $8K more in repairs and replacements the first year, never really got it renovated but did get some touring and camping use out of it.
  • Thanks for the replies. You guys pretty much confirmed what I has been thinking.

Like I said we definately didnt know what we were getting into. But the only thing to do is accept the situation and get in there and do what we can. Definately a lot of work ahead.

Hopefully the metal frame is ok, but if not I have a friend who is a blacksmith.

    Wish us Luck!

  • Many roof rebuild projects with photos on the web. Be prepared to cut out rusted metal framing and weld in new. May require entire new rubber roof. If the framing is not too bad I would get the structure figured out / fixed / replaced where needed, then Liquid EPDM finally.
  • I would worry about the structure first. If there is a lot of structural work needed, it very well could require dismantling the roof to do that work (especially if it's the roof trusses/beams that need work).

Not to be a downer, but I think you may be in for far more work than you're anticipating to bring this unit up to snuff. It sounds as though you may have to rebuild a large portion of the house part. I'd suggest not making any firm commitments (or buying a lot of materials, etc.) until you've done the necessary disassembly and inspections and so forth to determine the full scope of what you need to do.
  • No ideas on whether to do the EPDM liquid roof before or after gutting and rebuilding the frame?
