I am looking for a used maybe a Newmar in the 40 ft range. I was told today that starting in 09 the engines were not as good as previous years. Is this true that in these years I would more likely to blow the engine. He did not tell me what would happen. Thanks for any reply.

2015 ISL9 Cummins: 9 mpg, pulling a Accord, 10 without. 35k lbs. I read the book, don't idle more than 10 mins. And why would I reduce my mpg, use more Oxygen, and pollute more than I did with my under-powered gassers. No problems so far.

They just aren't that bad. Most of the negative hype is spewed by owners of older trucks.
It's the same stuff that went around when unleaded gas came to be. It was going to ruin all our engines and kill performance. Just like the new diesel emissions equipment, it had some growing pains but now these engines are better than ever.

I had a 2000 ISB engine that I liked but after 12 years and 60,000 miles there were indications of excessive wear of the pistons, called piston slap. So I was forced to shop for a new MH or quit. I had planned to run the 2000 as long as I was RVing. The new RV has a 2012 ISB. It has more power and more fuel economy. I say I am better off with the new one, but of course not better off in the pocketbook. An older diesel will be running on the new low sulfur fuel which it was not designed for. Most everyone says it is not a problem. Why not buy a newer diesel while you are at it.

The 2010 and newer engines are more expensive and complicated. Some of the manufacturers had issues with the early engines. They are more complicated but not necessarily less reliable.

When I purchased my 2009 Tiffin it had a 2008 non-DEF engine which I have really liked. Also, due to the higher cost of the new engines coupled with the needed rear engine and cap redesign the price of the 2010 was substantially higher.

People like the older engines because you don't have to add Urea to them. Lots of emissions junk on put on. That's what they could be referring too. Engines continue to improve. The Ford Super Duty engine is far better then it was a half a dozen years ago.
