North Georgia Mountains

Never having driven in northern Georgia, we're wondering how steep the climbs/descents are for an RV and tow dolly toad. We've been loving all the GA State Parks and would like to stay at Tallulah Gorge and then on to Cloudland Canyon, maybe others. Any suggestions for routes or pertinent info?

Thank you!!
  • Some are pretty steep but none are very long just get in a low gear and deal with it....Its a very nice area

Since you are in GA now I'll guess you will use 441 to Tallulah Gorge... good road and nothing steep or curvy. I would suggest Moccasin Creek SP west of Clayton on Lake Burton and Vogel SP (if you can get in) south of Blairsville. 76 has been straighten and is a good road these days so not a problem for your MH. Vogel is before the steep/curvy portion of 19/129 and you would want to back track to Blairsville and then west. Trackrock CG is a good place to stay if you cannot get into Vogel.
I would recommend 19/129 north to NC and 64/74 west through the Ocoee Gorge... much better road after the slide was repaired several years ago. On the north side of Cleveland TN instead of getting on I-75 to Chatt, take 11/64 which will bypass the good hill on 75 and put you on it at exit 11. I would probably use I-24 to I-59 to get to Clouldland. A visit to Lookout Mountain (in the toad) and the Chatt Aquarium is worth your time.
  • Thanks for the suggestions. ill check out this sparks too. Such a beautiful state!!!

ALABAMA has the same deal in their high mtn areas... Don't forget to move over there for more of the same... DESOTO and CHEAHA stands out for us. We really love camping on the WEST RIM side at CLOUDLAND CANYON up on LookOut Mtn. We use I59 at the Trenton Ga exit. Really nice folks at Clouodland...

You might want to drive your standard truck to those places first over a week end since you live out that way and see what you are going to up against.. Some of those mtn roads are pretty scary... Don't see many CLASS A's on them...

Also hearing some of these great places are getting the budget AX soon. Everyone running out of money it seems and unfortunate the NATL PARKS always get the first hit...

We do almost all of our OFF-ROAD CAMPING in the high country of VA-NC-TN-GA-AL Then we might run down to the Mytrle Beach and Gulf Coast areas for a change once in a while.

All of my road trip go through Gatlinburg TN (Coming and GOING) haha...

  • As for as Cloudland Canyon, the road coming from Trenton is steep and curvy but easily doable in a MH just take your time, I was not the only DP there. My only complaint about Cloudland was at the check-in station/store, there is little parking there while you check in, I had to just about park in the ditch to leave the road clear.
