Oil Change Viscosity Mistake

I just spaced at the parts store. In the stack of 5w-30 oil there was one box of SAE 30, and without noticing, I bought it. I did not realize it until after I had already poured the required 6 quarts back into the engine.

2005 Itasca with a workhorse chassis, 8.1 engine. In Southern Cal and will be traveling through AZ, NV and Utah.

Should I just drain it and replace it or will I be OK?

I have a 2005 Burb with an 8.1 and the only recommended oil is 5w-30. My question for the OP is this: Where are you going in AZ and UT? At higher elevations the nighttime temps can easily drop in the 30's. Bryce Canyon and the North Rim of the GC are both over 7900 ft. Personally I'd probably switch it out just so I would have to worry about it on vacation.

I personally would leave it and change in the fall when the temps drop.
30W affords the same protection as 10W30, it's just a little thicker in cold weather.

As per Workhorse Manual

"Gasoline Engines
– For all temperature ranges the
preferred oil for your engine is SAE 5W-30. However,
you can use SAE 10W-30 if t
emperatures stay above 0
degrees F (18 degrees C). For heavy-duty driving in
summer temperatures, above 40 degrees F (4 Degrees
C), there can be an advantage to a single-viscosity
straight SAE 30. Refer to adjacent chart"

Ass you can see, in your driving area, the 30 weight oil provides an advantage.

You can take the advice here for what it is worth. If it was me, I would drain it out and refill with 5W-30. Then you never have to worry about it again.

I run sraight 30w in almost all of my cars and trucks, along with power washer, motorcycles, etc.
1999 Holiday Rambler Endeavor 38'. Cummins ISB 275, allison 3060.
Toys pulled: 22x8.5 open deck PJ flatbed. 5200# axles. Sand car with ecotec engine. Multiple 1980's ATC's(3 wheelers). We're duners!

I agree as well. Perfect time of year for a straight 30 if you just have to mess up.

I concur.....

multi viscosity is to handle wide ranges of temps.....
where you are shouldn't be an issue at all

At this time of year, traveling where you are, it is probably a plus. Don't worry about it.
