Oil Change

how many quarts does the big block chevy take on the P30 chassis and what weights do you use?
  • put 7 quarts in with filter, filter not as big as the ac delco I took off. Also installed a rebuilt starter as long as I was under there, starter has been turning over slower, now it doesn't
  • Choice of filter (length) can affect amount of oil - plus/minus a quart or more.
  • My Big Block Chevy takes exactly 6-1/2 quarts! The shop charges me for 7 quarts so I get 1/2 qt. back every oil change. I use Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil 5W-30W extended performance (has a gold cap on the oil jug).
  • We have a 1995 P30 with the 7.4 TBI and it takes 10W30 ...7 quarts with the filter change.

The 8.1 only takes a little north of 6.5 quarts unless you use the old 7.4 filters (which I do) and then it takes 7 even. OP, you might want to list your motor displacement and year as that would help.
    1990 454
