since we are guessing here, I believe that they started out at 3,500 and when I fussed about that being inadequate here, it was pointed out that the new more powerful one was 5,000, and got fussed at about that.

I agree. Phoenix USA has been installing 5000 pound hitches on every Ford chassis model as far back as 2007 when we bought our 2007 2350.
All Phoenix Crusiers come with a 5000 pound hitch. I tow a 2004 Jeep Liberty with my 2552.
..............snip......................
I can't really comment about towing with the PC family of Sprinter models.
Just thought I'd emphasize for the O.P. that this relates only to the Ford chassis models- Sprinters still unknown. - ron_dittmerExplorer II

On the Phoenix Cruiser forum, there has been some discussion whether a 4-door Wrangler can be towed given it's near 5000 pound curb weight gets close to the 5000 pound limit. I personally wouldn't give it another thought, tow it with a good tow brake and sleep well at night, though I wouldn't load up a 4-door Wrangler with too much other stuff like we've done on occasion with our 2006 Liberty 4x4 with bikes, golf clubs, fire wood, and more. I think a couple bikes with a hitch mounted bike rack on the back of a 4-door Wrangler would be my limit.
Another thing for certain, the E350 and E450 chassis can handle towing the 5000 pound limit. The E350's weight rating is less, but then a smaller/lighter house is mounted on it's back which compensates for that.
If you want a PC on steroids, order a small model 2350 built on an E450. That would provide much more towing ability aside from the hitch itself. I'd consider that if towing a multi-horse trailer. The draw back to this is that the ride would naturally be a little rougher due to the stiffer E450 suspension with a lighter load on it's back.

I believe I got around that on my 24' 97 Coachmen that came with a 3,500# hitch/tow rating . I went to a metal fabrication shop where they built a custom hitch which they tied into the main frame rail, in front of the frame extension.
As far as I'm concerned my MH is now capable of towing what Ford says the E350 can tow. - Dusty_RExplorerYou also need to know to what spec. the frame extion is built.
Dusty - Mich_FExplorerIt looks like the information is more or less on their site. They do give the GVWRs and GCWRs for their units. If you price a unit hitches are listed as options. I imagine at least in the case of the Fords they rate them to tow 5,000#.
You should one way or another, be able to tow what the van builder rates them to tow. - magnusfideExplorer IITowing also means an upgraded radiator in some cases. Their website encourages you to call them with such questions; I'd do that first.
- BumpyroadExplorerask them. these things change.
