Question about heat pumps

I recently purchased a 29d Melbourne Class C. Love it. My question is about what they call electric heat, or the heat pump. I am new to this kind of setup. When we had temps in the low 50's, this seemed to work really well, with plenty of warm air out of the A/C ducts. We have just had a rather cold snap in the northeast. Last night temp was in the 30's and the heat pump came on, but just cold air came out of the ducts. Is there a certain temp where the heat pump won't work, or could mine possibly have problems? Thanks.
  • I want to thank you all very much for the education on a heat pump. I thought that they would work regardless of the outdoor temperature. This is a new thing for me. That's why I love this forum; everyone so very helpful to share what they know. Again, a great big thank you !!

RV roof A/C units can have two very different kinds of heat:
Heat pump OR heat strips. Your A/C model number should tell you which you have.

If it put out heat at 50º and no heat at 30º.
It is a good bet that it is a Heat Pump.
Heat Strips in a AC put out heat at 50º & 30º the same.

Heat pumps don't work under about 40 degrees.

A good fixed site one will operate down to about 20 F, at which point it may not make enough heat to do the job for the house.
(This has no bearing on RV units though.)
  • I have had heat pumps in two rvs over the years. I agree with both posts above. Use the heat pump at 45-50 degrees and above ambient temp and below that, kick on the old lpg heater. OR, buy yourself a small 750/1500 watt household heater and use it when you are plugged in. They are quiet and personally I can't sleep with that loud gas heater kicking on and off.
