Rear View Camera

I want to be able to have a rear view camera hooked up on my MH in order to monitor my tow vehicle and also help with traffic behind me. Is there a way to change the hookup of the existing camera that currently only activates when the transmission is in reverse or would I have to install a separate camera? If I have to add an additional camera, is it possible to tie it in to the dash screen or will I need a separate screen as well?

That is true for the turn signal cameras, but you should have a rear view camera. Salesmen don't always know. Like the one that told us our generator was propane. I said, ?????? He said, they ALL are. No, that's not true. I got the serial number off of it and called Onan. It was a GAS powered generator as I thought.

It may be a setting, but I'm betting you have a rearview camera. A backup camera only comes on when you are in reverse. There is a difference between a backup and a rearview camera.

We had a friend who refused to run with his rearview camera on going down the road, something we did without fail to keep an eye on the toad and on traffic. I asked him why he didn't have it on. He said he couldn't stand the road noise. I said. . . "You do know there is a volume control on it don't you?" He looked at me like I was daft. Guess what? It had a volume control. He had the coach for over a year and didn't know that. 🙂

Unrelated question: When we first started RVing, we had a 1991 Explorer Sport which had a 4.0L V-6 and a 5-speed. That was a tough and dependable little brute. It could tow its own weight (3300 lbs) and was an easy toad for us. It died with over 307,000 miles on it.
I'd like to hear your experience with the new Bronco Sport. Good luck with that! It seems to me you've bought into a first class rig.

OK. Good to know. Once we take delivery I will have a chance to play with it.

I would guess you can change the setting in the dash monitor. We have a 2018 Tiffin and there are MANY settings in the monitor. Just play with it. Ours left/right and rear are always on while driving, but each go to full screen when in reverse or turn signal engaged. I have adjusted how they are displayed. Your salesperson was not correct.

You have a new Tiffin and it doesn't have a rear view camera on it? I'm surprised. My 2006 Tiffin had it. I have not seen a Class A without one. I would call the boys at Tiffin and ask about it.

It should always be on. Been like that for years. I’m guessing you make a change in the settings on the monitor.

Some monitors allow you to make the switch right from the front, without accessing the back of the monitor.

Perfect! Is that something an RV dealer can do or is more a DYI project?

Somewhere, either on the display unit or the camera itself, there's a connection to the reverse circuit to activate and deactivate the camera. If you connect that instead to a constant-on circuit (or, more usefully, one that's on when the key is in run), the camera will operate all the time. There's no need for an additional camera. If you want to get really fancy, you could install a switch to select between always on and on only in reverse--which would obviously be a bit more straightforward to do usefully if the requisite connection is on the display unit.

You'll a 12v positive lead to the toggle switch then route a 16ga primary wire from the toggle to the camera. Disconnect the reverse wire on the camera and connect that primary wire from the toggle switch. You can turn the camera on or off with the toggle switch.

Ours has that build in. You just push in the switch for either backup or camera.
