Replacing Ceiling

Hi, this is my first time posting, so forgive me if this is in the wrong section.

I have a 1995 Holiday Rambler Motorhome and the head liner is sagging in places. Instead of trying to fix the headliner, I thought about putting a 1/4 wood ceiling throughout. I am good at working with wood, but not so much with vinyl. Problem is I can't find a diagram of how the roof structure is built.

My questions are:

1) What holds the ceiling up in the Motorhome?

2) Has anybody else put a wood ceiling in a Motorhome?

3: How far apart are the ceiling joist? Not sure it has joist. Just asking.

If anyone could give me a few pointers, I would really appreciate it.
  • I cannot reply on your requested topics, but might suggest you use luan instead of the 1/4 in plywood as would be lighter and easier to work with when you have to make it curve to the arch of the ceiling?????
  • I'll just give you my .02 Before you go through that MASSIVE project, consider buying a can of 3M headliner spray glue. You spray it on the outside of the headliner, and hold it up and tight. It works GREAT and is insanely easy compared to replacing the entire ceiling. They sell it on amazon.
  • On my rig, the reason the ceiling material was sagging is`because of the failure of the foam between the outer ceiling vinyl and the luan.

The ceiling vinyl must be removed to get at the degrading foam. From that point you have various ceiling finish options, a lot of which are explained in other posts on this site.

In my case, I removed the upper cabinets; then removed and rebuilt the whole ceiling sandwich before reinstalling.

  • Jon, that is exactly what the problem is with my ceiling. The foam has deteriorated and it will not hold the vinyl. I've removed all of the vinyl and I'm getting it ready for the new T&G wood ceiling. I know that it's probably overkill, but I'm OCD and it just got on my nerves..lol The new wood ceiling will look great though. It wasn't as bad as I though.
  • Not sure when Monaco purchased HR, BUT, Monaco ceiling panels are a 1 piece of Luan on top with the foam and then the vinyl. You cut out the complete panel and replace. THAT gets you to the roof cross member studs. LOOK at the ceiling panel at a roof vent with the inside garnish removed. You will see how it is sandwiched. We replaced as I outlined when under warranty and we had to fix a sagging panel. Doug
