road construction on I 85

how bad is road construction on I85 from Virginia to charolette nc.
  • no big issues with I-85. from petersburg to NC line one short 1 mi one lane. I drove it yesterday down to durham, in NC the stretch from mm 233 to about 222 was one lane but they have opened the N bound lanes so as soon as the jersey barriers are removed should be 2 lanes SB open. Henderson area has some one lane traffic. south of Falls lake there is a stretch of 1 lane.
Nothing to make me want to go on another route.
one lane is 55 or 60 and traffic was moving right along.
I would avoid as much of I-95 as possible.

  • Bump boy how about my 40ft DP with a 32ft trailer? Will I be better off going 64 to 95?

yep, I-85 from Petersburg yesterday just had a 1 lane construction area that was about 1 mile in length had to slow down from 70 to 60.
and yes in the Henderson area there is quite a bit of one lane 55 mph highway. but unless there is a wreck or something no big deal. Now if I was towing a 40 ft 5er, I might think it took an extra hour. :)

My daughter came down it 21 oct and said it took her an extra hour to get from Petersburg to Durham. Going back she went 64 to Rockymount then up 95. Said it was quicker-----I didn't even know they were working on the north bound side.

there must have been a wreck or something major wrong. that is only a 128 mile trip. the areas where there are single lanes pretty much move along at 55 when I have taken them. three hours for a normally 2 hour trip??

  • Just North of Charlotte, I-85 MM 54 to MM 62, there is a widening project underway. Avoid morning and evening rush hours if you can-

Other wise no problems- we drive from Charlotte to DC to see our daughter several times each year. Have a safe trip.
