Forget about MPG's and drive with traffic staying in safe road position. The dynamics of road vertical ups and downs, negates the sweet spot due to the weight push going down and the weight drag going up grades. Sweet spots are even useless in flat terrain as traffic dictates the safest speed. Proper tire inflation to the load is more important than sweet spot RPM's. Just know enough to speed up and slow down at RV smooth and safe rates. 8 seconds behind any vehicle in front of you at 60 MPH and merge into moving traffic with signals and accelerate to traffic speed ASAP, even if it means putting the pedal to the metal. SAFETY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN SAVING A FEW PENNIES.
What a bunch of baloney!
jack h - JoeHExplorer IIIOn our prior coach we had the v-10 and after getting a scan guage, I saw that we did best at 61-62 mph.... got between 7.8 and 8.2 mpg over 100,000+ miles. It was a 37' Pace Arrow and we towed a Geo tracker .
- hankoExplorerMine likes 2400 rpm which is about 65. I think the 24000 lb chasis is geared lower than the 22
- tderonneExplorerI have some data that shows the fuel consumption for the 6.8 2 Valve is best between about 2000 and 2500 RPM, and flat in that band. It's just wide open data though. Only data I have for part throttle is at 2000 RPM.
2000 to 2500 RPM is about 50 to 62 MPH with a 5.38 axle and 19.5" tires, about 55 to 69 MPH with the 5.38 and 22.5" tires. Pretty wide range, and it doesn't get too bad too fast outside that range.
But, as others have said, aero is the dominant factor. Slower is better. WAY better. Limped a couple hundred miles at 50 MPH once, well over 10 MPG, compared to my regular 8.0 at 60 MPH... - Dadio24ExplorerI am amazed to the amount of answers/opinions this question has received. I have driven my V10 MH from 62 to 70. Haven’t been about to find the sweet spot. I found I like 67 the best so to reduce stress and add to the enjoyment of the trip. I have never been about to achieve 7-8 mpg. I normally get about 6 mpg on average going to and from Colorado. I look forward to more on this!
- TragedyTrousersExplorerNot much difference I found in speed vs mpg on my V10. Towing and not towing didn't make much difference in mpg either. 63mph seems to be where its happiest. 7.5 to 7.75mpg.
- fla-gypsyExplorerDependant entirely on rear gear, wheel size and transmission ratios.
- jplante4Explorer IIThe numbers being offered are centering around 62 MPH, but fuel economy has more to do with aerodynamics of pushing an 8 X 11 foot piece of plywood through the air than it does with mechanics. You want the lowest speed in the highest gear. That speed would be just before the transmission comes out of overdrive or downshifts.
- Dale_TravelingExplorer IIAnother 62 MPH driver. Set the cruise, sit back and watch the world go by. If you really want to have fun find the speed limiter (around 75 MPH) and watch the gas gauge move.
