RV Fire.

We were travelling on I 45 south of Houston headed to Galveston when we came up on an D.P. being towed. smoke was rolling out of the back of the Mo Ho I thought the tires had blown. The wrecker was just moving on, I sped up to get along side of coach and noticed that it had been in a fire and it looked like it may have been ,what I thought was the location for the fridge. The burned area was about 2' wide all the way up the side of the coach. I guess this had just happened and smoke was still coming out from the event. The wrecker took an exit just as I was getting along side. I hope everyone was alright and my heart went out to them to be going through that kind of misfortune. Of course what caught fire is speculation on my part, but still a bad situation.
  • I agree with MMSmith thats why I was trying to catch up to the wrecker I thought that the air from towing it had made it reignite, after I realized all the rear tires were still inflated.
  • There was a Class A that burned this last Fri. at the bottom of Wolf Creek Pass in CO. Traffic was stopped for about 2 hrs. The motor home was a complete loss. It apparently was caused by brakes overheating.
  • My dad had a 1979 Class C in 1992. He went through it and replaced brakes, some engine parts and a new exhaust system. The rig caught fire on the PA Turnpike. He saw the smoke in the mirror and got out OK (was traveling alone)but the rig burned to the ground in a few minutes. Insurance company investigated and discovered that the new exhaust system touched bare wood without a shield. Lesson......make sure RV savvy technicians work on your rigs. Then, double check things where fire safety may be a factor.
  • Smoke was rolling out of the back while it was being towed? That isn't right, sounds like the fire started back up.
  • Reason being, although rare, that the screw connections can loosen up over time and the vast majority travel with the propane fridge operating to be an ignition source. It never hurts to do a soap bubble test of connections prior to each trip.
  • Motor homes attract fire like trailer parks attract tornadoes it seems.....no logical reason.
  • Never good to hear, hope all are safe and they get back on the road asap.
