San Diego to Dallas

Planning a trip in DEC from San Diego to Dallas.......heading on the southern route, I believe it's starts as the 8 then to the 10. Anything I should be aware of. How's the weather along that route in the winter. Can I expect any snow along the way. I figure the southern route is better then trying 40 through Flagstaff because of snow. Thanks
  • Love that route...traveled it many times in winter months with no issues. Did have to spend the night just outside of Abilene because of snow flurries, but all was clear in the morning.
  • I20 is a piece of cake 99% of the time, except for very heavy traffic 99% of the time.
  • Making that trip myself this December, says coach. Don't USUALLY have any issues that time of year, however there is always a chance. Interstate travel is normally good. Best thing I can say is if it is really cold, don't drive past 10pm or before 7am.
  • For the most part, across Arizona on I8/I10 is probably your best bet. The long range weather forecast doesn't present any big issues. However, East of Benson AZ, going through Texas Canyon, the elevation does climb to above 4000 ft, so when wet at night, there is a chance of freezing. I believe the worst part of your trip may be in Dallas area, being impacted by the typical cold weather. I've ben stuck at DFW a few time due to snow. Have a safe trip.
  • Also keep in mind that the speed limit in Texas is 80 mph. So, depending what your 'comfortable' speed is (mine is about 60-65 mph), people might be flying by you. Use your flashers on the hills if you slow down.

    Safe travels,
    MM.
  • That time of year there is always a possibility of Ice storms across I 10and I20, just watch the weather.

A few high places like Sierra Blanca and near the I10 and I20 split are more prone to Icing and always remember that the bridges freeze before the roadway, they can be more of a problem if you are not use to driving in cold climates.

As a retired OTR driver I have seen a lot wrecks on dry pavement just after a small bridge. So just be aware those hidden dangers, they will definitely bring on the pucker factor.
  • The southern route is far better than traveling I_40. However, you can still encounter winter weather and road conditions anywhere along the more southern route as well so watch the weather and if possible be ready to stop any hang up a day or so.
  • I have encountered ice in January on I-20. Like you say, better than I-40. I-40 was shutdown when we were traveling I-20.
  • Don't forget to go from I 10 to I 20 about 50 miles east of Van Horn in west Texas...or you'll end up in San Antonio.
