Hello everyone, I filled the self contained fresh water tank in my Winnebago Adventurer at 2/3 full yesterday! The DW went out to the RV today and turned the water back on from our house faucet to the RV. I forgot to reset my tank switch from self contained fresh water fill to City Water. My wife left the RV to come back inside our house. A neighbor came knocking on my front door to tell me water was leaking from my RV. There is a water overflow valve on top of the self contained fresh water tank to which the overflowing water was escaping. I also had water coming out my fill tube on the other side of the coach from where the hose was hooked. This tells me more water was coming into the fresh water tank then what was coming out of the fresh water tank overflow valve. We discharged water from the fresh water tank drain valve under the tank to make sure no more water would be going out of the overflow. We inspected the RV for water damage and couldn't find any! Is there anything else that I should check for or can I go buy a Lottery Ticket?

that happened to me once. i had water in two of the exterior storage compartments. you might check yours.

I always turn my water refill valve to city water before turning off the water fill source so as to avoid this issue.

Water damage will not show right away. Usually takes months of constantly wet wood to rotten. If you have moisture trap between the walls, floors and tanks, the process started. Remove whatever you can from RV and keep doors open for few days.

My water overflow goes straight to the ground with nothing else getting wet.

I never carry a full tank of fresh water. However when I "usually" put water in I watch thru the compartment beside the door where the tank is located. That night I came in with KFC to eat and turned water on and went in to eat. Heard big bang and looked out and water was going every where. I though I had destroyed the tank but no.

If you saw water coming from anywhere other than the overflow which should only be going to the ground I would be looking very, very closely as how water got into any of your storage compartments.

I have built in pressure regulator on my motorhome (I'm sure most also have this) so regardless of the hose pressure, I don't get a lot of pressure into the motorhome. But the problem this causes is it takes about 20 minutes to fill my 100 gallon water tank. So I can't tell you how many times I've been distracted in that 20 minutes and walked away only to come back and find water streaming out of the overflow vent. I've flooded out a couple of campsites!

If it's anything like my Tiffin, you're fine.
I have both the switch to change from City Water to tank fill, and on the panel, it clearly states to open the fresh water gravity fill. I too walked away, and not only was the water coming out the vent, but the fill. After shutting the water off, it still spilled out for a few more minutes, so I suspect the tanks may have slightly expanded, but have no long term issues.
My old 5th wheel did not have the gravity fill port, only the city water, or I'd use the winterizing port to fill from a jerry can type tank. I worried all the time that the small overflow wouldn't be able to handle the intake if coming from city water.

To me being able to see the tank level is the best of all possible solutions. My Dutch Star would siphon nearly 1/4 of the tank out the overflow after filling. I thought about cutting the overflow hose and putting in a valve to shut it off and decided the potential of me being dumb and forgetting to reopen it later after the tank level went down was too great.

Instead I removed the pegboard panel that allowed me to see the tank and determine when it was full, not relying on the overflow to tell me. Now I know what is in the tank and don't have to guess from the gauges which never seem very accurate.

You might have a tear in or loose vent line. Over filling should go straight to ground as others have mentioned.

On ours I can see the tank. When filling it is always leave an inch or so before it hits the overflow.

And Dennis is right. I saw my Dad do that once. The valves on his Tiffin were in the reverse location you'd think they'd be in. Fortunately nothing too gross came out and it was good for a laugh.

He painted the valves after that one, red and green. :B
Bruce, I can watch my water fill also. I didn't have it filled fully only 2/3 so I lucked out! I was carrying stuff in and out to the RV at the time.

Thanks, Dennis, I'm pretty much fearless until it comes to the RV! You just never know what's going to happen.

One problem a lot of coaches have is that if you fill the tank to the top, and shut off the incoming water hose, water will siphon out of the fresh water tank through the overflow hose. This has been known to drain about a third of the water out of the tank on to the ground.
