Shopping for a Class A

So I'm looking at upgrading from a pull behind to a class a. Found a 96 Holiday Rambler LE 35' Cummins pusher....121k miles but clean. One slide....pretty loaded....any issues specific to Ramblers I should watch for? I believe its a Freightliner chassis. 24.5 rubber, basement AC. Hopefully it'll come home Saturday. The miles don't scare me with the chassis and engine or the Allison from past truck experience.....just worried about specific Class A or Rambler issues. I read the sticky on buying and what not and it was helpful....thanks for any help.
  • Ok so I spent about 2 hours picking this thing apart, drove it etc. Found the furnace needs a fwn motor (done that before) and has a cut wire making inoperable. The right front leveling jack has a blown hydro line. It needs all 4 air bags replaced due to being dry rotted. It had several of the supports under the cargo bays severely rotted and needing replacement as well. Ran and drove great though. All exterior striping was shot, a few windows fogged, the side door had pretty bad electrolysis at the bottom as well....I don't mind some work but he'd only budge 250.00 off his asking price. ....air bags are 800 alone.
  • Thanks for the advice so far. I plan on checking the hitch but I know the original owner towed a race car when he bought this unit so I imagine its heavier. If not....I'll upgrade. Is there a maximum weight I should avoid? Possibly a recommendation by Freightliner or Rambler?
  • Freightliner is a good chassis. They have a help desk that will answer your questions and help troubleshoot with no charge to the customer. 1 800 FTL HELP

I doubt the coach you're looking at will have more than a 5000 lb hitch.

On my HR, the seal tape on the top of the slide began to lose grip along the edges. If you find this, it can be cut back and recovered with eternabond tape.

  • Check the seals around the slide, make sure they're plyable. Slides in the ninetys were far and few between. Only the high ended ones had slide options. They're power by 12 volt electric or hydralic, in conjuctionn with the leveling system. The only other thing is the alignment of the slide, make sure that's it opens and closes evenly Good luck with it, keeps us posted as to your discoveries,FMCA has a great forum on DPs, that can be of help.
  • I meant rust underneath. I looked at a 95 last weekend and it had rust repairs done on the front of each cargo bay behind the front wheels.
  • Not rust on the skin. Battery effect. Electrolysis between the aluminum skin and the frame. My 98 was starting to get pinholes around 2000. Not all of them did it. The HRs had above average build quality. Solid wood cabinets and doors, etc.
  • Any mods I'd make I always do any supporting mods needed as well....its rated I beleive 230hp/600tq. Not sure how it will handle the load. Its as far as I know been in Pennsylvania since new so obviously I'll look for rust ....darn salt
  • Check the skin for electrolysis cancer; tiny pinholes in the skin.

Be careful adding HP; adds more heat, too and cooling system might not be able to handle it.
  • Forgot to add....reason for a class a diesel is a few different ones....I like the size and layout but also I pull antique tractors and I'd like to pull it with the RV to take the family along....trailer is like 3800 and the tractor another 4000....I feel the truck chassis should handle that right? The 5.9 might need a little bump in power but that's pretty simple.
