SilverLeaf, Check engine light CAT/Freightliner experts

My 2005 Freightliner-CAT C-7 chassis has started giving me CHECK ENGINE light occasionally.

Fleetwood, 50K miles.

It has happened when I stopped suddenly, hit a bump and once when I went around a long off camber corner. All guages read normal and it does go into limp mode.
It always resets if I turn it off a few minutes and today, it went off by itself after 15 minutes or so.

My question is this. My local Diesel house charges $175 to read the codes. Would a SilverLeaf tell me as much as their diags or Freightliners diags will? I would rather put the $175 toward a Silverleaf which I will have down the road. Reading their specs it sounds like it should but real world experience is golden.

Its a weird problem and it is so intermittent I want some knowledge of what is causing it to help chase it down. All my fluid levels are good.
It seems like it is a a wiring issue or a sensor that is affected by vibration or the pitch change.

Thanks for your help.
  • my 2001 Tradewinds with the Cat 3126b just gave me a check engine light coming north on ROute 81 thru central/northern PA....turned out to be just a little low on tranny fluid.....topped it off, light went away, no more issue.....

The Silverleaf VMSpc says it will do this. I've been running the VMSpc for about 60,000 miles, but have never had a check engine light or codes to read, so no real world experience. The VMSpc needs a pc for the display. I use an old Windows 2000 touchscreen tablet as a dedicated VMSpc monitor.

A couple months back, I was have a "check engine light" issue as you describe on my 2004, cat 3126. It was frustrating not knowing when it would go into the "limp mode" Took it to a Freighterliner shop in Gilbert, AZ. They ran the codes and did a road test and could not come to a conclusion. Weeks latter and just outside of Denver, CO, I got fed up and took it to another Freightliner shop. After reading the codes they stated that the "Injection Actuation Pressure Control Sensor" is bad and needs to be replaced. 2 weeks and 1500 miles latter the Cat runs great.

Thanks. Was it random or could you associate it to bumps or turns?

It was random. Not every day. At any speed, but mostly at highway speeds. Would only last a brief moment. Not associated with bumps or turns.

  • My wire harness to my dash & display actually came loose in my BCC compartment & would cause errors when hitting bumps. It would come & go. Just a thought. You may have a connector that is not connecting well.
  • Mine has done the same thing on occasion. It was low coolant in the bottle when stoping. One other time it was the low oil sensor
