slideout awning

We have a 2012 Tiffin Phaeton. One of the slideout awnings does not retract when the slide is retracted. How do I go about fixing it?
  • Call Tiffin Tech, they are great and will walk you through issues.

  • You have to be real careful with the spring loaded awnings. Remove the wrong fastener and you could get a face full of mounting bracket.

Usually the topper awnings have torsion springs on both ends of the roller. Get ladder and check the roller to see if it rolls freely (bad) or if it's just jammed (not so bad). Beyond that check to see if it's still under warranty.

Post the make and model of the topper will help. I have PDF sheets concerning installation and such details for the toppers on my coach which might be different then what Tiffin installed on your coach.
  • My bedroom slide topper (Carefree of Colorado) when putting it out snapped and the topper went limp. The end tab broke off and the torsion spring unwound mine has only one spring. I could move the roll by hand. removed the screws on the end and the 2 screws that holds the topper in place then removed the topper. Took it in for repairs needed a new end cap and they replaced the topper. Don't remove anything if the spring is loaded or you may be checking out your health insurance.

  • Frequently this is caused by leaves, pine needles, etc. getting caught inside the owning cover and jamming it up. There is normally a screw on each end that needs to be removed, then the cover will swivel up when you depress a button on the other side from where the screw was. Make sure your slide is fully extended before doing this. You may be surprised how much trash is in there!!
