STARCHOICE signal

Heading down to Arizona in a couple of months. Wondering if my Starchoice dish will still pick up a signal. Anyone heard anything or been down there this summer?
  • What I've responded to it what will happen this year. Shaw changed things effective July 1, 2013. If the LNB on your motor home is not the same as the one at home and you need a receiver refresh they will not do it without a second account. We don't use ours much in the summer in Canada and if it's left for more than 30 days you require the dreaded receiver refresh. Shaw has been changing LNB on home installations to the new XKU for the new satellite. If you have the XKU at home you likely have the older on on your motor home. If you don't regularly use your system on the motor home you will need a receiver refresh and this is when they screw you.:(
  • Starchoice (Now Shaw Direct) will work fine. We use it all the way to southern Mexico. Note that the new (3rd) satellite won't work south of the Canada/US border, the footprint is not wide enough. The original 2 work just fine. If you have the dish with 2 LNBs there will be no problem. If you get the chance, the 75CM dish is better for the HD channels or if you go south into Mexico.

We have called from Mexico several times and have had no issues nor extra charges. I hope that Shaw realises that if they try to charge extra or disallow the snowbirds they will loose thousands of customers.

We'll have to see what happens this year.
  • Shawdirect launched a new satellite that will only broadcast within Canada (all HD). They still have their two original so technically you will receive the same as last year. The kicker is that if your LNB on your motor home is different than the one at home and you haven't been using it you will need a receiver refresh. They will then inform you that you have to set up a second account and they will charge you 50% more based on your current fee. This is only if you were part of the Home Away from Home. If you weren't then it's 75% more. If the LNB's are the same don't tell them that it's attached to your motor home. Tell them it's the dish at home and they'll refresh it. They can't tell where you're receiving the signal even though they insist they can. If you're in the US and you need assistance don't tell them where you are - say you're at home because they will not support you while you're in the US. If they find you are in the US they will basically hangup on you. It seems that they recruited an executive from Bell in the spring and this is the result. I went with Shaw last year because then insisted they wouldn't treat their customers the way that Bell did - I guess money talks. I'll be switching the home back to Rogers next month and will deal with satellite service from a provider in the US.
  • According to My information we will still receive the same channels as before the introduction of their New Satelite.

The big change at Shaw Direct is that They will no longer talk You through any problems that we might encounter while on the road or at Our Southern destination.

They have also discontinued their Home Away or RV account option.

You are now supposed to obtain a separate account for each location that has a receiver!
  • I used Shaw direct in Tucson last winter. Good signal.

PLAN B would be to use the NATIONAL BROADCAST System using the OTA Antenna getting signals from the local towns. Its full blown high def digital TV signals and is FREE to the public.

We get from 6-36 digital channels just about anywhere we go here on the East side of the US.

Just passing along our PLAN B...
