SUPERIOR BRAND MH ?

Lookin at purchase of early 70-s SUPERIOR class A. Preliminary inspection shows surprisingly good shape. All original. Asking 3K. Would I have challenges finding Chassis parts? Believe it is on a Dodge chassis. No water damage. Everything seems to work. Large Onan Generator. Do LP tank, class A type, expire? Thanks for any input friends
  • That can happen with any RV
7 yrs ago we purchased a 1995 safari
I've been therein money into ever since
The first 2 years were trouble free
Since then I've put about$25,000 into the it mainly in engine repairs
Everything else has been rock solid

Try for $2500 or less, you will be putting many dollars into this 70"s motorhome, no matter the condition its still old and will need replaced either today or tomorrow.

I bought a 79 Xplorer 272 class C with a Dodge 440, restored it inside with new interior, some motor work, new radiator, new roof a/c, new fridge, etc, etc, and sold it for less than I put in to it.

Its cool to own but it will become a hole for you to throw money into that will never return.
  • You guys are great. Many thanks for the advice. I will return on Friday for a thorough evaluation

Had no many decades ago. Other than the exhaust problem it was a good MH... many great memories and miles.
  • You go that old and you SHOULD be handy. There is no problem with the age so to say, but you may find yourself needing to engineer/machine a lot of parts.
  • Which size tires and wheels
The old 17" ? Are getting hard to find
Take a closer look under chassis at the brake system, drivers side forward of the rear wheels
The old bendix dual vacuum boost cylinders, might be hard to find replacements for them

The engine and transmission are a solid combination
The radiator should probably be flushed and checked for leaks , so as to prevent over heating
Bearings brake shoes, all the common stuff , should be available, lots of old dodge trucks on the road , ignition switch and other electrical items might need a connector change , cut off new and splice in old one , or move some wires in the connector
Been thru that a few times with friends and my old dodge when I had it
But everything always worked once I figured out the wiring change,
Dodge/Chrysler doesn't Mfg replacement oem parts, so the stuff from Napa or AutoZone comes from after market REPLACEMENT, with newer connectors or the wires will be in differ positions in the same old connector , because it really for 78 instead of 74, and dodge moved the wires in different spots different years using the same switch and connector

Not a deal breaker just something to know about
  • Had several 70s Dodge motorhomes and loved the old 440s. Biggest problems was they ate exhaust manifolds to the point where I doubt you could find a used one anywhere. Of course that means installing headers. I also remember something about a resistor mounted in the engine compartment that would fail and the engine would not run, always carried a spare.

    Might be a fun project.
  • Mounted tank do not expire unless damage. Parts, go to you local parts house and see . Brakes, suspension parts. Engine part. Transmission. You might have to rewire for the chassis. Dodge was not know for good connector, at lease not on the few that we owned. Wheels /tires. All of ours had the 440 dodge.
