Tiffin and Newmar Drop down bunks

In narrowing our search for a new MH, we decided we need a drop down bunk. Our previous 2 coaches had these and they are great for our son so we don't have to make/unmake a couch bed every day and he's 16 so too big for a bunkhouse bunk. Oddly enough our first 2 Thors had huge drop down bunks and worked great. As we look for a MH with better quality we like Newmar and Tiffin but they seem to have the worst drop down bunk designs. This is kind of a deal breaker. The two fold design, thin mattress and what equates to a single bed isn't selling us. Does anyone have experience with the drop down bunk from Tiffin or Newmar? Why does it seem the further up the food chain you go, the less family oriented coaches are? As always, any input is appreciated.

I would never have imagined that the drop down bunk would be the Achilles heel for Newmar or Tiffin for our shopping. Winnie seems to be back on the table, their bunks look a little more usable while still being a decent quality coach.

Watch the cargo carrying capacity on the Winnies. Really liked the Adventurer (I think the 36Z); but, is on a 22K chassis and only had about 1,100 lb CCC. Two in the coach and a tank of water and and is close it’s load limit.

  • As one poster said, The yoga mat they call a mattress.

Can't say about Tiffin or Newmar but my 2016 Bounder has the drop down bunk and it is about a full size bed. Cheap 2" foam mattress. Oldest grandson wouldn't sleep on it. We put a 3" topper on it, now he tosses the other ones off.

Have read some are using an air mattress.

The more up the food chain users usually have become empty nesters except for the occasional grand kid. What are you line/model are you looking at in a Newmar. Call Newmar perhaps they could improve the bed as a special or provide suggestions.

Looking at the Bay Star or Bay Star Sport - lots of little nuances like 22.5 wheels in the Bay Star. There's only a few floorplans that offer the drop down bunk - Although DW made the mistake of walking through a Kountry Star 3709- I think I have to reel her back in as that's not really in the budget. We liked the Tiffin 36LA but again, the drop down bunk was pretty bad - same design really as Newmar. We plan on part timing for 3-6 mos next year so floorplan is really critical. We also would like a washer and dryer but any Newmar plan with a bunk does not have a washer and dryer. Newmar is making this really hard for us but I want a good quality coach.
