Time for tires... Need some help please

Hey everyone, Saved up for 6 tires, but tried searching for some info on my older tires ( 7.50 x 16 ) and want to switch over to a normal tire, a 235 or 215 85/16R

My Coach is a 1987 Class A Honey RV 25'
P30 chassis
GVWR is 11800

Currently the tires on it are the 7.50x16 as mentioned, the front are 10 Ply, but the rear dullies are 8 ply.
Maufacture Date Code on Tires: 1304 = March 22-28 of 2004 ( yea. almost 13 years old )

I am thinking I am wanting to go 12 or 14 ply ( load range F or G? )
any suggestions if I should, or are 10 ply good enough... Range E?

I hope someone can get me in the right direction, so I can be educated when I go to the local tire stores.
  • A higher ply tire won't change your GVWR or change your allowable axle weights. Unless of course they currently don't meet your rigs capacity. If your running near the tire ratings now, a little more wiggle room with a higher ply will allow you a peace of mind.
  • I would go with an E Rated tire. It has a bit more capacity and stiffer sidewalls that will help with handling.
  • My best guess is that those tire translate into LT235-85R16 Load Range E. The potential problem I see would be getting the correct sidewall clearance between the rear dual tires. My old rig is on an 18000# F53 chassis, and 10-ply load range E tires are at their max capacity.
  • Found this on a search, replacement tires for 7.50-16 tires. on another forum.

If we're talking truck tires, a 235/85R16 is almost a perfect match, as close as you will find.
  • I would try to get the best tire I can for the money I'm willing to spend while trying to also get the highest ply rating I can.

But if you want to math it, weigh all four corners of your fully loaded RV. Figure the weight each tire must support. Add 25% to that weight for confidence rating. Buy a tire with a load rating near that.

At least that's what I'd do.
  • Appreciate everyones input and getting me in the right direction.
I ended up getting 6 New Tires today installed for $811 OTD

local Clark Tire store did the swap... They were kind of alarmed as the rear inside tires had tubes... they thought they may be the original tires from the late '80s
anyway, new tires now on all 6 wheels.

    Went with:
    Grantland Milestar 215/85R16 115/112S Load Range E 10 ply
