We just got back from a short trip, 212 miles one way. The passengers side front tire of our Jeep Wrangler wore all the tread off on the way down. Has any one had this happen to them. The tire was a 10" all terrain. Tire did not loose air.

Thanks everyone for the information,

Thanks everyone for the information on the steering wheel locking up. DH is thinking about disconnecting the locking steering wheel assembly. Thanks men for not treating me like a stupid woman, my husband does not like to use the computer. Thanks again.

Had the same thing happen then this summer on a 2002 Wrangler, had the tread scraped off of the passenger tire after the stearing locked after several tight turns behind the MH. The driver's front wheel had very minor damage - you had to look for it. Had to find two new tires for the front and make the driver's tire my spare.

A tip that pays off is to put a sheet off of a lint roller wrapped around the top of your steering wheel. You can watch it in the rear camera to see if the steering wheel is turning properly - returning to center.

You bet I did. I did not have the switch key turned correctly and I did good till I made a sharp turn out of a gas station and the steering locked, the right front tire was worn all the way down to the cord. Left front was worn but not real bad.Plus I had bits of rubber all up the back of the MH.
Yes, It was the first time I had towed the Jeep. Never let that happen again.

I would suspect if the steering wheel was locked both tires would have worn. Same if you have a braking system that was a problem.

I can only think of two possible problems. Tire was defective, which I think is very unlikely or there is a mechanical problem with that one axle such as the brake dragging, alignment problem, wheel bearing/CV joint or such. To wear off the tread in 200K miles is pretty serious so have the front end checked out by a front end specialists as soon as possible.

Just a suggestion, but I'd have the tow bar checked out. Sounds to me like maybe one of the arms was binding, probably the one that attaches to the passenger side.

No, it has been towed about t5,000 miles. It might have locked up with the terrible roads in Oklahoma. Thanks for all the information. I checked a couple of tire places on line and it looks like replacement tires will run about $230. Lesson learned.

Big tires have a lot more leverage on the steering components. They will also change the steering geometry, so it may not track correctly. Might be good to have an alignment shop look at it.

Had the same thing happen to a friend of mine while towing his Jeep from Atlanta to Chesapeake area. We never figured out what happened. I believe it the steering was locked, both fronts would have been worn.

Nope, one time I did forget to unlock steering wheel and someone flagged me down with a couple of mile of hooking up. Sounds to me like something was locked up and tire was "dragging" somehow. How is the front suspension and steering components, perhaps a problem there.

disabling jeep steering wheel lock

You may need a set of TORX security bits to complete this project. It took me a little over an hour to do it.

Now all I do is start it up put the transmission in drive, transfer case in neutral, then the transmission back to park. Done!
