Toilet Seal Replacement

We have a Thetford Aqua Magic Style II toilet in our Thor - Ace Motorhome that has stopped holding water. I have purchased a new seal and will be installing it shortly. My question is does anyone have any suggestions / recommendations for the making the project easier. The new part came with instructions which of course I will attempt to follow. At least they are in English. Any suggestions ! Thanks !

We have had good luck with cleaning the mineral deposits off the seal and lubricating it with a little cooking oil Depending on the water where we are, that usually works for a few months and then clean again. Stuff builds up on there and doesn't let it close and seal the way it should. Maybe you want to try cleaning the existing one, lubricating it (helps keeps it softer) and keep the new one as a spare if it works.
    X-2
  • I found this fix it on the internet and tackled it myself.

Thetford has a product I plan to use prior to storing my MH:

    Toilet Seal lubricant and conditioner.

Good luck. (The project wasn't as bad as I anticipated.) Have a bucket of hot water on hand to clean the surrounding area etc.
  • I tried the plumbers silicone grease, cleaned out the slot the blade goes in, to no avail. Total seal replacement time is an hour or so, did it on the tailgate of my truck. You can probably find a video on youtube, not a bad job. mine works fine now.
  • Thanks to all, I will give the Plumbers Grease a try for starters.
  • After years of service, toilets can get kinda gross, and by the time you need to fix it, sometimes it's just easier to replace it. Not being a smarty pants, but replacing it is actually easier.

Once they leak it seems like it's a constant battle to keep them from leaking.

  • Ours stopped holding water...put on disposable rubber gloves and applied this a couple times. Holds water for over a year now.
