Towing with a RoadTrek???

Considering buying a 2001 Dodge 190 Versatile (318). 116000 miles, decent outside, some paint chipping, very good inside - it all works! I know it might be overkill, but I'd really like to be able to tow a 5200 lb trailer with a hitch weight of 633 with this Roadtrek. Anybody know if this is possible? Safe? Crazy?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
  • Here's my take (as someone who's done a LOT of towing with large trailers): as the weight of the trailer approaches your vehicle weight (my Transit van weighs around 5800 lbs), you want some serious wheelbase length so you don't get the tail wagging the dog. New trucks have all sorts of anti-sway features built into the towing packages - your Dodge won't have that. Your trailer hitch is probably rated for #5000 and less hitch weight than your trailer. Unless it was a very short distance you could cover via backroads; I wouldn't do it.

    I have a 31 ft MH, V10 and I would NOT tow a 5,200lb trailer.

BTW, do you also plan to put something ON the trailer too?

Oh brother.:R There was no sarcasm. Unless that is what 'you' read into it. It was a statement that I have a larger RV with larger towing capacity than the OP and would not tow that much weight. Stick to the topic instead of bashing other replies.

Right back at you. This experience has made me move to another forum Glad yours is bigger, but towing that amount of weight is neither unusual nor beyond reality

  • I believe that you're asking way to much of the Dodge 460 engine, That's a lot of weight for the braking and for the tranny. But check the owners manual for safe capacity for towing and allow for your cargo weight (water, gasoline, supplies, passengers, food, etc.)in any towing (and braking) capacity
  • What does the owners manual say? If you don't have one they are available at the RT web site for download.
