First time out that far North West. Would love to visit Yellowstone National Park, with a stop in Jackson Hole WY, interested on recommendations where to go and what to visit, also RV parking, traveling on a HR Vacationer 36 footer, would be leaving from Denver CO.

Try the Grizzly RV Park in West Yellowstone. Take the Yellow Bus tours of Yellowstone. You won't be disappointed.

Stay in one of the many campgrounds inside the park and tour on your own (assuming you have a toad). Or - stay in the Grand Tetons - beautiful camping - and visit Yellowstone from there. The singular problem with Yellowstone is that it's over loved - too many tourists. As recently as 1981 we drove to Old Faithful Lodge w/o reservations and secured a room for the night. Now you'd better reserve months ahead. Have visited many, many times over the past 45 years - summer and by snowmobile in the winter. Never make reservations - last summer was the first time we experienced problems as all the campgrounds were full - EXCEPT for the RV park which is almost always booked way in advance. Go figure. BTW - too many tourists equates to drastically reduced wildlife sightings. Still a beautiful and must see park, however.

I'll make three recommendations since we did that trip last year.1. While in Denver...stay at Chatfield State Park. You will not be disappointed.2. Coming across Wyoming, stay at Buffalo Bill State Park. Not the loop closest to Cody but the one farther down the road. Again, you won't be disappointed.3. When coming in the East Gate, watch for Bighorn Sheep. There are several groups (herds?) that are just inside the East Gate. Take your time going through the park. Exit the West Gate and Grizzly RV Park is right there. Walking distance to town.Finally, Yellowstone is basically a figure eight with a north circle and a south circle. The south circle has all the geysers including Old Faithful and some animals, mostly elk and buffalo. The north circle has all the animals. We hit the north circle around noon and took about 7 hours to tour. We saw Elk, Bighorn Sheep, Bison, Moose, Beaver, Bear X2, a Wolf and a nest of three baby owls...good luck...enjoy the park...Dennis

The valley itself is referred to as "Jackson's Hole" and the town is the town of "Jackson". If the man was a resident...he hadnt lived there very long! The nearby Lodges have their own "handle" such as Snow King...etc...etc.

The hole was named after Davy Jackson a mountain man of many decades ago and a hole was a valley "usually" when the mountain men could "hold up" for the winter and it supplied them shelter and game animals.

As much as we love Yellowstone there's no comparison for one more day in Yellowstone vs. going to Grand Teton Nat'l Park for a day or hopefully longer. The town of Jackson is just like any other tourist town. Has its share of junk shops; its share of fine places to eat and its share of other types of shops (Jack Dennis fly fishing and Tom Mangleson's photo studio) as any other town has.

1 day to see the WHOLE town...and 1 day to view the valley itself.

One of the nicest campgrounds (dry camp) is Grant campground. Right on the lake ans nestled in the trees.

When seeing YNP...stay at the Grizzly in West Yellowstone. BY FAR the best CG around. When in Cody, WY...stay at the Ponderosa park, which is a great cg on that side of YNP and besides it belongs to a sister-in-law to one of our RV buddies right here on the BB.

Its only a LONG block away from the Buffalo Bill museum ( which is really 5 museums in 1... Buffalo Bill; Whitney art gallery of western Art; Museum of the American plains Indians..and the Winchester Gun Collection...of which I was told they only have room to display 5500 guns of a 7000+ collection at one time...????)

We spent the day on two river rafting trips in Jackson. Absolutely loved the experience.

Also, not to miss is the Gizzly & Wolf Discovery Center HERE, a short walk from Grizzly RV.

We stayed in a Forest Service campground just north of West Yellowstone last June. It's on the Madison River and a beautiful spot. We were able to do lots of stops in the park driving a 31' class C. Late June may be better than after July 4. Teton is a gorgeous park and yes, fewer people and nice hiking. Take a good look at the map and you might even adjust your plans once in the area.

Beyond visiting Yellowstone, this thread is interesting as it really illustrates the philosophical differences between types of motor home owners. Some advocating an in-town RV park and organized tour which always leaves me wondering why they travel by motor home? Might as well stay in a hotel/motel - many available in West yellowstone. We travel by motor home because we don't have to stay 'in town' - when purchasing a motor home we look for self containment - generator, large water and holding tanks, etc. Gives us the ability to comfortably camp within these many wonderful national Parks (and Yellowstone has several really nice campgrounds). Last year - in Fishing Bridge (because all the regular parks were full!) with two small grandsons, we experienced a buffalo stampede right thru our camp spot. You won't find that in town! BTW - have stayed several times in motels in West Yellowstone - most recently in winter time so we could snowmobile thru the park. Several years ago on our own, most recently only on rented machines in a tour group as that's all that is allowed. Still fun and the granddaughters enjoyed it. This is a wonderful park that we'll probably avoid this summer because of too many tourists.
