Wall, S.D. to Mount Rushmore

I will be going from Wall, S.D. to Mount Rushmore and would like to go thru the Badlands. Does anyone know if I can make it with a 35' motor home towing a Jeep? Looks like I can take the North Rim road, any suggestions?

Thank you!
  • No problem at all. I have done it several times.

yup, no problem...but...do NOT take the branch road to the prairie dog town with your MH. the last time we were on that road it was a rutted washboard nightmare in the MH. the main road thru the park is paved but depending on the time of year you may find parking at the turnouts problematic with your MH/toad, though. why not just extend your stay in Wall for one more night and take the toad through the park and to the prairie dog village or...park the MH at the visitor center (plenty of big rig parking there), disconnect and run the toad thru the park?

while you're at it you can also take a tour of a Minuteman Missle Silo. the visitor center is just off I-90 at the same exit for the eastern entrance to the Badlands Natl Park. you sign up for the tour there and then are bused to the actual site.
  • Thank you for the answers.

RK911 we will be staying at Wall 1 night then Mount Rushmore 3 nights. Figured we can see some from the west side. Reservations are already made from Fl. to Yellowstone already. But thank you for the information.
  • If you are coming from the East and going to Mt.Rushmore from Wall, you need to get off I 90 at the Badlands Park exit 131 highway 240. This will take you down to the Park Visitor Center if you're interested, or you can follow 240 as it curves to the west and back up to I 90 and Wall. It is a good road, fine for big rigs.
  • You will have no problems with or without your tow vehicle. The road through the park is good. A more scenic route is to go through the park from Wall, to the east, then take highway 44 to Rapid City. Then take US 16 to Mt. Rushmore.
  • Just read an interesting article about Wall Drug.

It is family owned and they have 300 signs along various highways.
  • We were through there just last year on the Goldwing. The roads were really good. Plenty wide enough too.

Information above is very accurate. Either side of the loop is good for a motorhome as we have done it a number of times. If you decide to stay a night the KOA in Interior is pretty nice with full hookups. Also if you decide to take the road from Interior to Hill city it is a very good road for a motorhome and is a pretty drive. Of course you will want to stop at Wall; a must see as it has to be Americas largest tourist trap.
  • It would be a lot more pleasant to spend the previous night in the Badlands campground then early next morning do the drive through the park with your motorhome (good paved road) ending at Wall Drug for an hour or so. Then continue on your drive.
