Washer drains to black tank

I recently discovered that my washing machine drains into the black tank of my new coach. On my 5ers, the washer either drained to a gray tank or, in the case of my last one, bypassed the tank completely and went right to the sewer line.

Is this a normal setup for a motorhome?
  • It de-nastifies the black tank (if that is really possible I don't know). But consider you are dumping very soapy water into the tank. You don't have to worry about the "pyramid" under the toilet.

On the downside, of course, it could fill the black tank a little bit quicker.

HOWEVER, the only way I could see this as a problem is if you were boondocking. But I simply can't imagine doing laundry boondocking (would have to run genny whole time). Otherwise, we usually have hookups.

Full timers would most likely always try to be on sewer anyway.

Exactly! For a full timer, this may well be an issue. For me, it works out nicely. I usually do a load, even on weekend trips because I have "house clothes" and "camper clothes" so I don't have to pack anything other than meds, laptop, kindle and chargers.

  • Winnebago did confirm that this was by design. I was just curious about how common a setup it is.

For my uses, it's actually not a bad thing. I camp mostly weekends or a week or so at a time right now, so getting extra water into the black works out well for me. I generally always have a site with sewer hookups, so having to dump mid trip isn't a huge issue.
  • That doesn't sound normal to me! We just bought a new (to us) 2006 Fleetwood Pace Arrow and its the first washer/dryer we have ever had. We used it on our 'maiden voyage' and it drained into the gray.
  • It all depends on the floorplan. Some floorplans, the gray routing from a sink or other appliance cannot be routed to the gray tank and so they route to the black tank. NO, it is NOT common on motorhomes. Doug
