Most, maybe all, AWD vehicles can't be flat towed......
We switched from a 2003 Sport Trac 4x4 automatic with over 265,000 miles driven and towed (timing chains going out $3000-$7000 repair or replace engine) to a AWD 2014 Ford Flex SEL. It is by far the easiest vehicle we have ever had to set up for towing (had someone else do the base plate and wiring for a change) and procedure to be followed for free wheeling. Start run for a few minutes, then the transmission to Neutral and turn the key back as far as it will go, that's it.
