AllClear ID & ID protection services?

Started receiving phone calls and emails that my AllClear ID protection was about to run out.

This is another reminder that your identity protection will expire on September 19, 2015.
You are eligible for a discount price of $8.50 to renew your protection (normally $14.95/month) with promotion code protectme.

When you renew, you can rest assured that AllClear ID has your back. Upon renewal, you will continue to receive the following services through AllClear Pro credit monitoring:
•Automatic access to identity repair if you ever suspect you’re a victim of identity theft. Just give us a call and we’ll investigate and do the work to repair your identity and credit history.
•Credit Monitoring to alert you if signs of identity theft are detected.
•$1 Million identity theft insurance coverage

I didn't know (or didn't remember) I even had allclear ID. I certainly haven't been getting charged for it.

If you choose not to renew, your credit monitoring service will expire, but you will continue to receive access to the following service at no cost to you:
•Identity Theft Monitoring will continue to alert you when stolen identity information from thousands of non-credit bureau sources is detected and reported to AllClear ID. This service does not include credit monitoring.
•Assisted Identity Repair Service - AllClear Investigators work with you to provide identity theft counseling and access to identity theft resources if you experience any fraud.

But this leads me to believe this must of been one of the 'free' services offered after one of the large company security breaches. Maybe Home Depot? I don't know, I can't keep up with this stuff.

My question is what if anything are you all doing with regard to ID theft protection?
  • If you don't recognize this as having it don't assume that you actually do. Even if Home Depot was giving it away, you should have been notified in some way that you have it. Delete the email.

The big ID protection company - Lifelock - that spends millions on advertising - was hacked. So much for a protected protection company. Your ID is best kept safe by you not putting personal and financial information out to be found and never opening emails from anyone or company you don't know - and even then be cautious.

I'm not renewing mine. But, I do monitor all our credit cards on line every morning...check for anything that isn't ours.

Same here, I only check my cards every Saturday. However, that is not what AllClear monitors. They are looking for a new card being issued on your name without your knowledge. Recently, I got a new charge card, and a week or so later, got a call from AllClear telling me the card had been issued and asking if I was aware of that. Since I did it, I said yes, and they hung up. That being said, I am not renewing AllClear either.

  • Thanks for the replies. downtheroad, that's a good reminder about the email.

So are you guys going with no ID theft protection?

I've never signed up (paid) for any, mostly because I tend to think of ID theft as it would be associated with CC fraud. And our CC's have been very aggressive at finding non-legit charges and shutting things down until the stuff can be straightened out.

However, I suspect 'ID theft' encompasses more than just CC's.

I guess I'm just trying to ferret out whether there's anything to all the scary ID theft commercials and stories, and if we are at a point where ID theft insurance should be considered as strongly as other insurance (home, car, liability, etc)?

Has anybody had a case of ID theft or known someone who has?

    Thanks

All Clear was free as a result of the Home Depot hack last year, I got the same notice. You don't remember signing up?

No I don't remember signing up, but that's not unusual. I sometimes forget where I parked my truck... and then I typically find it in my driveway. :)

Probably Home Depot ... We got the same thing today & we had it thru them.
  • Got mine too...All Clear was a freebe from Home Depot.
Common practice for a hacked outfit to offer 1 year free ID protection and monitoring service.

Aside: If you do want to pay and extend the service, never go through the email link...Go directly to the company web site.

Email links can be phishing and fraudulent.

  • Nothing right now. I really don't know about these companies... I've had Identity Guard for a couple years and just let it expire. I wouldn't go near Lifelock on a bet.

I did not quote your entire post because that would be just silly.
