Malware? Use other computer to get Malwarebytes, put the file on a thumb drive. Install it on her computer and run it. That's my first step for things like this.

How old is the computer, what type is it, and is there anything salvageable or valuable on it?

The answer to these questions may lead to a conclusion that you now have a paperweight.

I haven't had malware in years, but I am super cautious about sites I visit and links I click. My Mom isn't. Clicks on everything FB will throw at her and thus I am always getting new friend requests from her and her device runs like frozen molasses.

In all seriousness, try and identify what type of malware it is, google the best remedy, load that onto a thumb drive from another device and run it. If you aren't saavy enough to do that, take it to a computer fixin store or geek squad - if it's worth what they will charge.

What did the "tracker" say? It may have been something relatively innocuous and you may have over reacted.

what, precisely, does "...Now she can't get back on the internet.",mean? do you have a broadband connection (DSL, Cable, etc)? what happens when she opens a browser?

Many of those popups are phish (They want you to give them access)

Now how are you connecting. I will assume Wi-Fi

you need to go to the wi-fi connect function (normally lower right on task bar may require you hit an UP arrow thing looks like ^ Can't tell you what the not connected Icon is but look for an "Antenna" would be guess 1
Open that you may just need to turn it back on (Should be an option)

Select your Router's SSID and you may need to re-enter your PSK (or not)

I have on my infectable machines a good firewall. If I set the security to MAX. there is no connection to anything outside the box

I completely understand. Sometimes my wife can’t get on the internet. Not pleasant and it’s not my fault. This is why I drink adult beverages.

I've been chasing vermin on computers since the days of DOS. I second the need for MalwareBytes in this case. It's the best tool to remove the sort of thing causing your problem. Like is said, at this point, you'll need to download it to a thumbdrive to install it on your wife's computer. The free version works great - it just doesn't run in the background to protect you all the time. You have set a schedule to run scans with it - other than that it's the same product.

Use System Restore to roll back the windows registry to before you had problems. For me this is always step #1. It can often remove any malware in the process. If it then seems to work fine run MalwareBytes.
